Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
Local laws require that dogs and cats be inoculated against rabies and dogs must wear a collar with rabies tag affixed. Microchipping is mandatory for all pets living in Richmond County including those on the installation.
The Department of Defense has approved a new policy to cover pet travel expenses, like pet shipping or quarantines fees, incurred by Service Members during Change of Station (PCS). As of January 1, 2024, Military Service Members going through a PCS within the continential United States can be reimbursed up to $550 for one household pet, either cat or dog, and $2,000 for moves to or from a location the continental United States to cover related to the transporation of the pet. While most Transportation offices will work with you to make sure your pets can travel with you it is ultimately your responsibility to research requirements, make arrangements and pay for your pets' travel. Pets cannot travel Space A and the guidelines on pet travel vary from airline to airline. Once you have coordinated your flight information through CWT/Port Call you’ll need to call that airline and verify that there is space for your animal. The sooner you make arrangements the better. If there is not room for your pet on your flight you may be able to coordinator with CWT/Port Call to arrange for another flight that accommodates. Ensure that you follow all recommended guidelines for pet travel.
Note that some breeds may not be accepted for shipping by airlines especially animals with a flat nose such as Pugs. Also many airlines will not transport pets in cargo during times of excessive heat or cold.
Lastly don't forget to update your pet's microchip with your new contact information upon arrival.
