New Parent Support Program

The New Parent Support Program is a team made up of nurses, social workers and home visitation specialists who offer support and guidance by helping parents:

• Build strong, healthy bonds with their infants and toddlers that will lay the foundation for their social and emotional development
• Manage the demands of parenting, especially when impacted by deployments and other military operations
• Remain flexible and responsive when navigating daily life
• Build a strong support network
• Respond to infant and toddler behavior sensitively and be attuned to their developmental needs
• Find services in the local community in time of need

New Parent Support Program staff are child development professionals, including registered nurses, clinical social workers, and para-professionals trained in the delivery and practice of established home visiting models. The program is supervised and monitored at the installation level by the Family Advocacy program manager.

The program is available to military families who are expecting a baby or have children age 3 or younger. Marine Corps eligibility includes families with at least one child under 5.

The New Parent Support Program promotes healthy Families through a variety of services including home visits, play mornings, and parenting classes. We help Soldiers and Families learn to cope with stress, isolation, post-deployment reunions, and the everyday demands of parenthood.  Families who are expecting a child or who have children up to 36 months old can participate in all of our services confidentially and free of charge. 

Home visits: Scheduled at your convenience, home visits bring you education and reassurance right to your own home on many topics, including breastfeeding, sleeping, nutrition, potty training, age-appropriate discipline, infant massage, baby sign language, developmental screenings, sibling rivalry, stress management, deployment issues, and time management. NPSP-Home Visitors are supportive and caring licensed clinical social workers or registered nurses. They have extensive experience working with young children and are sensitive to your unique challenges as a military Family.

Play mornings are available at Fort Liberty Neighborhood Centers. An interactive playgroup to assist parents in learning developmentally appropriate play techniques and to help children improve their social, cognitive, and motor skills. Structured activities include singing and dancing, story time, a craft project, and free play time. No registration required.

You don't have to be a NEW parent to participate in the program! Military Families that are pregnant or with children up to 36 months old are eligible for NPSP services. Family Advocacy offers classes to parents with children of all ages. If you already have children and you would require childcare to attend one of these classes, we offer free childcare for them! Sign up two weeks prior to the class.
