Cost of Living

While the cost of living in Poland is generally lower than in the U.S., be aware of initial expenses as part of your in-processing and settling in Poland. Please make sure to work with the Housing Office to use the military contract and limit upfront rental costs, otherwise be prepared to pay approximately three months’ rent upfront to cover the first month's rent, security deposit and a realtor fee. These fees should be covered by entitlements except for the deposit which will be returned by the landlord upon lease termination except for costs for damages.

Mission

In support of US Army Installation Command - Europe, US Army Garrison Poland executes base operations and installation support services at 11 Army Materiel Command (AMC) - managed Poland sites focused on improving Soldier and civilian quality of life and enhancing operational readiness of USAREUR-AF and V Corps rotational units within the Republic of Poland.

History

Pre-WWI Era:

  • 1860 the home of 6th Grenadier Regiment of the V Corps of the Prussian Army.
  • 1882 (some records claim 1880), the North Barracks (currently Building no. 7) was built.
  • A year later, the eastern Barracks finished (currently the Poznan City Police Building).

Post WWI:

  • The Prussian Regiment was posted on the base until 1918, when the Polish took over the city at the time of the Greater Poland Uprising.
  • The first Polish unit to occupy the base was the 1st Greater Poland Rifle Regiment, later renamed the 57th Infantry Regiment
  • After World War I, the base was the home of the Polish 14th Infantry Division until German occupation from September 1939 until February 1945
  • Arrival of U.S. Army in Poznan:
    • When the first U.S. Soldiers with 4th Infantry Division set foot on the base, it was the home of the:
      • 14th Garrison Support Unit (GSU) (Poland)
      • Non-Commissioned Officer Academy
      • Military Police Unit
      • Air Force's Representative Band

Now it is the permanent home of the U.S. V Corps (Forward) Headquarters and the U.S. Army Garrison Poland, while remaining the 14th GSU Headquarters.

Poland is in central Europe. Poland borders Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, and Russa. Its northern border runs along the Baltic Sea.
