When planning for a move with the military, you might consider moving into government housing. Government housing is owned and maintained by the Department of Defense and is typically on the installation. Eligibility and availability for this type of housing may vary by service member, family size and installation. Learn more about the different options, benefits and discounts that may be available to you through government housing.
All service members E1 and above with a family housing requirement may apply for on-post family housing. In addition, military retirees, single soldiers E6 and above, and all non-military who qualify, are able to apply for on-post housing via a background check.
Privatized family housing is managed by the RCI Partners Lend-lease and Universal Services. The on-post housing inventory consists of a total of 14 villages to include Liberty Village containing single and townhomes with various housing sizes from two to five bedrooms.
Wait periods for leasing a home varies based on rank, bedroom requirements and the number of personnel on the waiting lists. Wait time can be from two weeks to 12 months depending on the occupancy rate.
Soldiers desiring to apply for on-post housing must do so within 30 days of their arrival at Ft Cavazos to receive an eligibility date back to the date of departure from last permanent duty station. If an application is made after the initial 30 days, the eligibility date will be the date of the application.
The military family housing at Fort Cavazos has been privatized under the Army's Residential Communities Initiative program authorized by the Military Housing Privatization Act enacted into law in 1996. The Department of the Army has a joint venture with Lend Lease for a 50-year project. In addition, there are 300 two-bedroom houses that are owned and managed by Universal Services Fort Cavazos under a modified ground lease managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Most local housing is located in the Killeen, Harker Heights and Copperas Cove areas. Commute time to Fort Cavazos is five to 15 minutes. Additional housing is available in Temple, Belton, Gatesville and Lampasas which is approximately a 30-minute drive.
Fort Cavazos is committed to providing single soldiers with a clean, healthy and safe living area that provides comfort. Barracks are managed by a garrison-unit partnership on Fort Cavazos under the Army Barracks Management Program with the military units managing the day-to-day assignment and termination process within the barracks footprint and the garrison oversight.
Certificates of Non-availability — Fort Cavazos uses a 95% barracks utilization rate, installation-wide to determine if a CNA is to be approved and issued. Soldiers, E5 and below, married to another service member on separate tours without family members, are required to reside in the barracks (AR 420-1, Chap 3-Chap 20/d). Currently, single soldiers, E6 and above, are not authorized to live in the barracks and have the option to apply for on-post family housing. To inquire, visit the Cavalry Family Housing website, or contact the leasing office.
E5 soldiers and below, with joint custody, or court-ordered to support family members, may be authorized to reside off post (AR 420-1 Table 3-5 Priority III note 2). Please have a conversation with the unit leaderships and housing for guidance on approval to live off-post. We recommend E5 soldiers and below with joint custody, or court-ordered to support family members do not sign a lease prior to approval from finance, housing and an endorsement from the military commander.
