Each installation provides information about the types of schools and programs offered on or near your installation for your child. Learn about the types of programs, guidelines and requirements for each school. Whether you choose to send your child to a Department of Defense School, a private school or public school, your installation can help you explore all of your options to make the right decision for you and your child.
McAlester Army Ammunition Plant does not have a school on the installation. All nearby public schools are located in Pittsburg County. MCAAP housing is in the Savanna School District and Savanna's school does provide transportation to their school. Persons living on the installation may use other McAlester area schools but no transportation is provided unless child attends the Child and Youth Services program.
Eastern State College in Wilburton, 45 miles from McAlester, offers courses for an associate degree. Eastern also has a campus located in McAlester that also offers upper-level courses from East Central State University Ada, Oklahoma and Southeastern State University Durant, Oklahoma. MCAAP housing is in the Savanna School District and Savanna's school does provide transportation to their school. Persons living on the installation may use other McAlester area schools but no transportation is provided unless child attends the Child and Youth Services (CYS) program. CYS provides transportation for children attending their program to several nearby schools. CYS provides care for 6 weeks to 18 years. CYS also offers an all day summer program for school-age children.
Public and Private schools have a food service program free and reduced priced lunches are available for students who meet eligibility requirements. All schools offer advanced level programs for college entry. All students are encouraged to take the PSAT and SAT, as well as the ACT. Dress code is authorized in all schools. All large schools have a marching band, social clubs, and sports.
All public and private schools in Pittsburg County area have middle schools. New students should bring shot records, certified birth certificate, child's social security number, and documents from previous schools, if available and Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students with special needs. High Schools
Area public and private schools have high schools. Required documents needed for enrolling students are: shot records, certified birth certificate, child's social security number, documents from pervious schools, if available, and Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students with special needs. Special Education
Personnel arriving with an exceptional family member should contact the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) coordinator upon arrival. The EFMP is designed to provide assistance to the children and adult depends on eligible military/civilian personnel.
EFMP coordinator acts as a liaison between the family and community agencies. The EFMP coordinator maintains a listing of off base resources to assist families with all areas of need. Private School
