If you need emergency assistance, you can expect to get help from your installation, your branch of service resources. There are programs to support you in a variety of situations, including victim assistance, emergencies en route and service-specific relief societies. Below, you’ll find types of assistance, contact information, and detailed procedures and guidance to help you through any tough circumstances that you or your family may face.
The mission of the Department of Defense Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program is to promote military readiness by eliminating sexual assault and ensuring excellence in victim advocacy and prevention efforts through the execution of SAPR policy, planning and oversight across the DOD community.
What Are the Reporting Options?
It is important to understand the two reporting options: restricted and unrestricted. Reporting options may vary from state to state — contact your local Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program coordinator for specifics. Contacting a law enforcement agency or medical personnel may not allow the victim a choice of the reporting options.
I Think I Was Sexually Assaulted
If you have been, or think you may have been sexually assaulted, immediately contact the DOD Safe Helpline at 877-995-5247 or at www.safehelpline.org. You can also contact your local Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program coordinator, or command Sexual Assault Prevention and Response victim advocate.

The American Red Cross offers support to military family members who must contact deployed sailors, verification of emergency leave information, emergency financial assistance, counseling, access to veterans services and resource referrals on a wide variety of topics. In a natural disaster or emergency, the American Red Cross will provide additional support in the form of shelters, counseling, and volunteers to assist with your needs.
The Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) branch of the American Red Cross provides a vital communications link between service members and their families, relaying emergency messages from home to remote locations around the world. The American Red Cross can send communication to deployed personnel on behalf of family members experiencing emergencies or other important events. These messages alert service members to situations on the home front, and are delivered around-the-clock, seven days a week, 365 days a year. AFES emergency communication services are available for births, deaths and illnesses, as well as other major life events or crises. In addition to supporting active-duty members and their families, the Red Cross reaches out to the National Guard and reserve community throughout the U.S.

The Commander, Navy Region Southwest Fleet and Family Support Center San Diego provides resource referrals for a variety of community and military agencies. FFSC consultants can provide individualized resource consultations, workshops, flyers and more. In addition to a variety of programs and services, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society provides emergency financial assistance to Active Duty and retired members of the Navy and Marine Corps, their eligible family members and survivors.
The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society provides interest-free loans or grants to help qualifying service members with emergency needs such as:
ervice members or eligible family members with an emergent need should contact the nearest NMCRS office to make an appointment. For the most time-critical emergencies, service members may be able to be assisted in an office the same day, but it is best to call the nearest office first to speak with a caseworker to determine how NMCRS may best be able to assist. If available, plan to bring your military identification card, most recent Leave and Earnings Statement, and any documentation that helps with verifying the need to the office. If you are outside the San Diego area and the San Diego area NMCRS offices are closed, or the emergency cannot wait until the next business day, the American Red Cross may administer emergency funds on behalf of NMCRS to qualifying service members and their families. Should you experience an emergency while traveling to your new duty station, the nearest military installation may be able to assist you. If you are unsure of how to locate the nearest installation or need resources in an emergency, you can go on-line to Military Installation or call Military OneSource at 800-342-9647 from anywhere within the United States. If calling from overseas, you can reach Military OneSource by calling collect 1-703-253-7599. Military OneSource professionals are available to military and their families, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Be sure to contact your gaining command point of contact to alert them of the situation. Your new command Ombudsman may also be able to provide you with resources.
