When planning for a move with the military, you might consider moving into government housing. Government housing is owned and maintained by the Department of Defense and is typically on the installation. Eligibility and availability for this type of housing may vary by service member, family size and installation. Learn more about the different options, benefits and discounts that may be available to you through government housing.
The Commander, Navy Region Southwest Family Housing Welcome Center at Naval Base San Diego is responsible for assignment of all military families in the San Diego area, including Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and Marine Corps Recruit Depot. It is highly recommended that each service member and family check in to the CNRSW Family Housing Welcome Center upon arrival to the San Diego area. For more information, please visit the CNRSW Family Housing website or call the CNRSW Family Housing Welcome Center at 619-556-8443.
Availability
There are over 9,000 government houses located at 38 housing sites throughout the San Diego area. Of these homes, approximately 8,600 are enlisted units and 600 are officer units.
Depending on the housing site selected, waiting times can be as little as 0-3 months or as long as 18-24 months. Please see the housing website for more information on housing availability, size of quarters, waiting time and pet restrictions.
Eligibility
All officers and enlisted personnel with accompanying dependents are eligible to apply for Military Family Housing. MFH is limited. Apply for housing at the CNRSW Family Housing Welcome Center located at Naval Base San Diego or send the required documents by email to sandiego_housing@navy.mil.
Sponsors with family members designated as Category IV or V in the Exceptional Family Member Program will be housed on a priority basis. Service members whose families are experiencing severe hardships should call the Housing Office for special assistance and services available to them.
Application Procedures
In order to apply, you are required to have the following:
Application may be made in person or submitted by mail. Those submitted by mail must be confirmed within 30 days of reporting to San Diego.
If you have a family member who is in need of a wheelchair access unit, documentation from your family member's physician should be included along with your housing application form and transfer orders. You should also identify any other medical requirements when you submit your application.
Control Date
Your control date (effective date of application) determines your placement on the housing waiting list. The control date will usually be your date of detachment from your last permanent duty station if you apply within 30 days of reporting to San Diego.
All personnel are required to renew their applications every six months. Renewal may be made in person, by email or by telephone at 619-556-8443. The CNRSW Family Housing Welcome Center recommends the service member or spouse periodically check with the center regarding the status of their application. Failure to provide current information may result in a delayed assignment to housing.
Government Housing
The majority of permanent-party barracks are government owned and controlled and are located on base. The Navy Unaccompanied Housing Office and/or Housing Service Center is responsible for determining eligibility, processing applications and making assignments. This office also manages housing operations, including resident relations and maintenance and repair coordination.
UH Assignment Permanent Party
Navy barracks are programmed to house all single, permanent-party sailors in pay grades E-1 to E-3 and E-4 with fewer than four years of service. Navy housing accommodates as many E-4s with more than four years of service as possible. Permanent-party E-1 to E-3s are normally assigned to shared sleeping rooms with no more than two sailors sharing a bath. E-4s are normally assigned to private sleeping rooms with no more than two sailors sharing a bath.
Students
Students are housed in dormitories and are typically in shared sleeping rooms. Dormitories vary depending on the type of training and range from open bay rooms for basic training to private rooms with amenities, such as bathrooms and kitchens.
Privatized Housing
Privatized UH is owned by a private entity and governed by a business agreement in which the Navy has limited rights and responsibilities. The privatized housing management company is entirely responsible for the construction, renovation, maintenance and day-to-day management of the housing. Privatized UH is located on base at the Pacific Beacon and Palmer Hall.
To apply for privatized UH, the Navy UH Office will process your application and refer you to the privatized housing management company that handles all resident matters, including leasing and maintenance.
For additional information, visit Naval Installations Command UH information or call Naval Base San Diego's UH Office at 619-556-1077.
