Learn about the types of programs, guidelines and requirements for each school. Whether you choose to send your child to a Department of Defense School, a private school or public school, your installation can help you explore all of your options to make the right decision for you and your child.
Depending on where you decide to live will determine what school your child will be zoned to. There are numerous school districts in the National Capital Region. Washington, DC
Washington, D.C. a child is eligible for kindergarten if he/she is five years old on or before 30 September of the school year. All day pre-care is available for four year-olds on or before 31 December of the school year.
Documents needed to enroll: birth certificate or equivalent, legal proof of residence, and verification of physical exam within the last twelve months. Proof of immunization is required. The transferee must furnish a previous record (such as a report card or a transfer slip) indicating grade level assignment, immunizations and physical exam records, official verification of date of birth and proof of residence.
Maryland
In Maryland, a child must be 5 years of age on or before 1 September of the school year in which he/she register for kindergarten. Virginia
In Virginia, a child may enter kindergarten if he/she turns age 5 on or before 30 September. Parents of children who will be age 5 before 1 October and before 1 November may petition for the enrollment of their child and must receive counseling on the advisability of their attending kindergarten. Social security number for the children are required for enrollment.

These programs are mainstreamed into the neighborhood schools that also admit students through an attendance boundary. The capacity for these specialized programs is capped at a level determined by the school. Schools have their own application and conduct their own lottery. The School Liaison Officer is the primary point of contact between a Military Installation, the Local School Administration, parent, and the Community at large. This office supports families with inbound/outbound school transfers and provides information on local schools, assists with school choice and provided information on home schooling options, graduation requirements, and post-secondary preparations. The school Liaison can assist you whether you live on base or in the community and is a wealth of knowledge for anyone coming to the D.C. metro area with school- aged children. Private School
There are numerous private schools located in the Washington, DC area. These include religiously affiliated schools, Montessori schools, schools for the arts, and others. The Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington will be a valuable resource in assisting you. The Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington provides co-ed, boys, girls and pre-school, nursery and kindergarten private school information in the metropolitan area.
