It’s likely that employment will change when a move occurs, especially for military spouses. The information below will provide you with employment assistance information and resources available such as SECO, MyCAA and MSEP Portals.
Individuals relocating to Washington, D.C. have the advantage of finding a wealth of jobs over a widespread area, particularly since Washington is centrally located in a tri-state region. This expands the options for finding employment throughout Washington, Maryland and Virginia. Our comprehensive transit system makes it easy to commute from outlying areas into the District.
Employment Prospects
Because of the multitude of employment prospects in the Washington area, you will also find a variety of positions available. Administrative, food service, construction workers, CEOs, computer technicians, education, retail sales, lawyers, housekeeping and medical are some of the positions you will find. The Washington area offers a host of opportunities in any career field with federal, state or local governments or in the private sector. Washington is also the premier location for a number of national professional and trade associations, an excellent resource for networking, learning more about your particular profession and tapping into the hidden job market.

In order to expedite the process of seeking a job, it is recommended that you hand carry all employment records and documents to include resumes, Department of Defense Form 214 (if applicable), Standard Form 171, SF 50, transcripts, certificates and licenses.
Those seeking a job are encouraged to access employment services with the Fleet and Family Support Center’s Family Employment Readiness Program (FERP). The program provides standardized employment information and services. Classes include both basic and advanced resume writing, job-search techniques, interviewing skills, salary negotiation and 10 steps to federal employment.
Individual one-on-one counseling is available on a variety of employment-seeking opportunities, including evaluation and identification of skills, resume writing and interview coaching.

The District of Columbia's Unemployment Compensation Program pays benefits to workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own, and who are ready, willing and able to work. For spouses who are currently working and are transferring to this area, you may be entitled to unemployment benefits. When departing your current position, indicate the reason for leaving as accompanying your military spouse on orders. Contact your current state unemployment agency to check on benefits before transferring.
