Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
All pets must be registered within 30 days of arriving in DC and the surrounding areas. Most cities and counties require proof of rabies and distemper vaccinations for licensing. Some require Bordetella and DLPP.
Most areas have leash laws and require that dogs and cats have tags. Licensing requirements vary from county to county and city to city. Look in the yellow pages under city treasurer's, licensing, or animal control offices to find out the current rules and regulations for licensing pets. Many military vets in the area will license your pet, but some of the licenses done by military vets are only good for the Housing areas that vet is designated for.
Quarantines are typically not required unless entering the United States from a rabies prevalent area. Visit the Centers for Disease Control website or contact the county/city animal control in the area you plan to reside in.
If moving overseas or within the continental United States; check with your command to review the restrictions and quarantine rules for pets within the area.
Make sure to ask about your pet when you make your reservations at DoD lodges. There are many pet boarding facilities available in the National Capital Region. Charges are subject to change.
