Sponsors with children should contact the School Liaison Program Manager (SLPM), Mr. Will Lannon at DSN: 314-478-7090 or commercial +011-49-1525-475-1344. Or, by email at: DET1.MFRC.SLO@us.af.mil. If you have school-age dependents, there are several options that need to be considered prior to your arrival. The Non-Department of Defense School Program (NDSP) serve students who live where Department of Defense (DoD) Schools are not available as is the case with Papa. Children may attend local private schools, public schools, home-based education, or even boarding school.
Families will be required to register with NDSP by completing a form 610 and adding a copy of their orders. Sponsors should hand carry their child's educational records including previous reports cards and standardized testing. Individual Education Plans (IEP) are no longer authorized at Papa AB, Hungary due to its remote educational environment.
Sponsors are able to register at the the NDSP website:

Quality Schools International (QSI) is an accredited, not for profit school offering an American International program. In Sept 2012, QSI opened a satellite school in Papa for children ages 3-17. NDSP provides an educational allowance for tuition and other allowable expenses as well as educational support. Parents can choose a local school, the tuition paying bilingual school or home school program. High School students in grades 9-12, also have a DoDEA Virtual School option and Boarding School option. Please communicate with your SLPM to explore the best option for you and your family.
The following schools are working with the multi-national families:
Fay Nursery School serves children from three to five years of age. They are a State-Sponsored Pre-K using a creative curriculum in Hungarian. Lessons are not taught in English, but there are many English-speaking teachers who oversee the classrooms. Many families choose this option for socialization and development purposes despites the language barrier. American parents also have the option to explore private daycares and homeschooling options as well.
One consideration of note, NDSP does not reimburse for students under the age of 5. Currently, the Universal Pre-K initiative is intended to roll out in 2024-2025 to begin reimbursing for 4-year-old children. Further timeline updates are pending.
Tarczy Lajos Primary School is a Hungarian Bilingual School for grades 1-8 offering some classes in English, however the majority of instruction takes place in Hungarian. Middle school students are eligible for on-line learning classes to supplement math and language.
Petofi Sandor Secondary Grammar School has a bilingual high school program. There are limited classes in English and supplemental homeschooling or on-line learning is necessary.
Please refer to the NDSP website or reach out to your SLPM for further information about the programs available.
