Fort Benning Visitor Access
Access to the installation is controlled through vehicle checkpoints. All vehicles will be stopped at the gates. Driversand passengers should be prepared to present identification. Children 15 and younger are exempt.
Effective 1 January 2015. Military ID/Retired Military ID/Family Member ID/ Common Access Card (CaC) will be required to access the base. Automated Installation Entry (AIE) card will be issued to contractors, sub-contractors, and vendors. All visitors will be subject to a background check before allowed to enter the installation. You can pick up your visitor's pass at the Visitor Control Center (Lindsey Creek Parkway/I-185).
Effective immediately, driver licenses and identification cards from the states of Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana Washington and the territory of American Samoa do not comply with the REAL ID Act and can no longer be used as the sole source for access to Fort Benning. New Mexico received an extension, so drivers licenses and ID cards from the state are acceptable for access to Fort Benning.
Residents of the five specified states and one territory must possess one of the following accepted authorized government-issued identification cards in lieu of their driver's license: Effective immediately, driver licenses and identification cards from the states of Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Washington and the territory of American Samoa do not comply with the REAL ID Act and can no longer be used as the sole source for access to Fort Benning. Federal officials may continue to accept Enhanced Driver's Licenses from these states.

Defense Service Network (DSN) Dialing Instructions
The DSN is the provider of long-distance communications service for the Department of Defense (DoD). Every installation has a special DSN number and the numbers vary by world-wide location. In order to place a call using DSN, the caller must be using a military phone on an installation. Cell phones cannot dial DSN numbers. When dialing a DSN number from a United States installation to another United States installation, it is unnecessary to dial the DSN 312 area code.
When dialing a DSN number to/from overseas locations, the DSN 314 area code must be included for all calls.
Privately owned firearms will only be brought onto the installation for the purpose of engaging in authorized activities such as hunting, dog training, and use of recreational range or marksmanship events.

Fort Benning was established in 1918, is named after Confederate General Henry L. Benning, who lived in Columbus. In 1918, the School of Infantry moved to Columbus, GA, from Fort Sill, OK. The first Infantry School was at Valley Forge where Major General von Steuben created the first model company and unified tactics for the Continental Army. Since 1918, Fort Benning has been the U.S. Army's premier training center, initially for Infantry Soldiers and then for Armor, Cavalry, Airborne and Air Mobility, Rangers and Officer Candidates.
Fort Benning, Georgia, will be renamed Fort Moore after Army Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and his wife, Julia Compton Moore. Moore commanded U.S. forces in the first large-scale battle of the Vietnam War. Dates pending for name change in 2023.
