If you need emergency assistance, you can expect to get help from your installation, your branch of service resources. There are programs to support you in a variety of situations, including victim assistance, emergencies en route and service-specific relief societies. Below, you’ll find types of assistance, contact information, and detailed procedures and guidance to help you through any tough circumstances that you or your family may face.
Columbus Air Force Base Operator/Security Forces

Air Force Aid Society can provide financial emergency assistance based upon need in the form of an interest-free loan grant, or a combination of both. Categories of financial assistance include basic living expenses (food, shelter, utilities), essential vehicle repair, funeral expenses, emergency travel, medical not covered by TRICARE, dental not covered by Family Member Dental Plan, pay and allotment problems, disasters, and assistance for widows and retirees. American Red Cross
The American Red Cross is always available for emergency aid anywhere you may be. Contact the ARC nearest you for official verification of emergency. They will then contact a Columbus Air Force Base representative. To contact an ARC representative for Columbus AFB, dial toll-free 877-272-7337. The American Red Cross can also help in arranging quick communications with home about family emergencies including verification of death or serious illness of immediate family, birth announcements to fathers deployed overseas, and health and welfare reports resulting from a lack of communication over a long period of time. Salvation Army
The Salvation Army provides support, training and resources to respond to the needs of those affected by emergencies without discrimination. The office is located at 2219 Main St., Columbus, MS 39701, telephone number 662-327-5137.
Make sure you have all your important documents with you, such as medical and dental records, pet health records, telephone list of important numbers (commander, next duty station, insurance company, and roadside assistance), etc. Do not pack these records in your household goods shipment!
Emergency Leave Procedures
If you experience an emergency situation requiring emergency or additional leave, contact the nearest American Red Cross office to verify the emergency and to assist in emergency leave approval. If additional leave is needed for an unplanned emergency not involving medical issues or death, contact your last command for a leave extension, or contact the Columbus Air Force Base command post at 662-434-7020 or DSN 312-742-7020. The command post will be able to assist you with the correct procedures for your situation.
