Shipping Pets

All Pets, companion animals, and horses maintained on Fort Novosel must be registered within 72 hours. Please drop by during duty hours and register your animals. Registration involves bringing proof of current vaccinations and microchipping as applicable to Ft. Novosel Veterinary Treatment Facility.

Your pets must maintain current vaccinations. All dogs and cats maintained on post must be microchipped. Alabama law requires annual rabies vaccination for dogs and cats. All companion animals must wear a Fort Novosel Veterinary Treatment Facility issued registration/rabies tag on its collar or harness at all times outdoors. Fort Novosel and surrounding communities have leash laws. Additionally you must show proof of previous vaccinations. Limit of three pets per household.

There is no quarantine for pets arriving from overseas as long as your pet has required rabies vaccine and is in good health. All horses maintained on Fort Novosel are subject to a quarantine period prior to introduction to the stable area. Coordinate this with the equestrian center and Vet Clinic prior to arrival.

Anytime a pet bites a person the animal is required to be quarantined either at the Fort Novosel Veterinary Treatment Facility or at a civilian veterinary hospital.

Most airlines only allow a limited number of pets in the cargo per flight. Call at least 60 days in advance to make arrangements for the flight. If you have to change planes you are responsible for seeing that your pet is transferred at the connecting point.

Often pets need vaccinations at least thirty days prior to traveling and for many countries such as Guam, Hawaii, England and Japan. Preparation must begin as long as one year in advance. A health certificate is required for all airline travel and recommended for travel by car as well. Health Certificates issued by Ft. Novosel Veterinary Treatment facility are good for 10 days for airline travel and 30 days for travel by car. Ft. Novosel Veterinary Treatment Facility maintains up-to-date pet import and export information.

Make sure your pet has no health problems. Your pet will be subjected to conditions guaranteed to cause stress. A clean bill of health is an important first step in assuring your pet's ability to adjust safely to unfamiliar surroundings. Also, make sure your pet has proper identification tags. The information should include your pet's name, your name, address and phone number. The carrier in which your pet will be spending most his trip is of the utmost importance.
