Emergency Assistance

First of all make sure you have all your important papers with you and not packed in your household goods. Numbers for the Officer of the Day, your Command Duty Office and your sponsor can be invaluable in case of emergency while in transit. The American Red Cross is always available for emergency aid anywhere you may be. You can contact the nearest chapter at Southeast Louisiana Chapter 2626 Canal Street New Orleans Louisiana 70119. They can be reached at 504-620-3150 or online. They can sometimes help with emergency financial assistance and contacting individuals or military commands that will need to know where you are and what's happening. Plan for the unexpected and it probably won't happen.

Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) aims to help active duty and retired Sailors, Marines, and their families get through difficult times. NMCRS provides financial emergency assistance based upon need through either loans or grants when there is a particular hardship. Their services are free and confidential as their compassionate staff understands the unique challenges of military life. Types of Interest-free Loans and Grants include:

• Financial Assistance and Education - NMCRS can help with everyday living expenses such as rent, food or a car repair, military pay issues, permanent change of station (PCS) support, or medical and dental costs. They offer a range of assistance along with financial education to help you navigate your financial future.
• Emergency Travel - If you need to travel due to the illness or death of an immediate family member, NMCRS offers expedited service to assist with the cost of transportation.
• Disaster Relief - When unforeseen natural or human-made incidents happen, NMCRS is there to assist Sailors and Marines.
• Quick Assist Loans - Active duty Sailors or Marines may receive an interest-free loan of up to $1,000 to meet urgent financial needs with a Quick Assist Loan (QAL).

Who is Eligible?

• Active duty or retired Sailor or Marine
• Eligible family member with military ID card
• Surviving spouse
• Reservist on extended active duty of 30 days or more

What is the Process?

• Find your local office and they will provide you with additional information to best prepare you for your visit and assistance request.
• Emergency travel and Quick Assist Loan (active duty Sailors and Marines only) do not require appointments and are available by walk-ins.
• Emergency assistance after business hours and holidays are supported through a liaison agreement with the American Red Cross. Please call 877-272-7337.

Since in 1899 The Salvation Army has provided emergency services to individuals and communities affected by disasters and other catastrophic events. The local Salvation Army Thrift Store accepts donated goods and sell to help support the community. There are many different ways to donate money to The Salvation Army. One way to donate is to put money in a red kettle at Christmas time. There are however other ways that you can donate year round. Regardless of how well you have planned emergencies do happen. What should you do in case of an emergency while your are traveling?

Military members and their families should look for the nearest military installation for help. The Army Emergency Relief, Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society and Air Force Aid Society are ready to assist. If assistance is needed due to a vehicle breakdown, contact the American Automobile Association. If you're a member, contact the local information operator for a hospital or road service depending on the emergency.
