Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
Moving with your pet includes researching airline requirements and quarantine restriction laws in your new location. Many airlines have requirements for size, weight, breed, number of animals, kennel construction, documentation and seasonal limitations. You may ship small pets on military flights, but availability and regulations frequently change. Contact your local Personal Property Office to request instructions for a specific country. Military OneSource can make your move easier with helpful tips, resources and hands-on information related to moving with pets and more. For additional information, see the Passenger and Pet Transportation for PCS Moves page - https://www.militaryonesource.mil/moving-housing/oconus-moves/logistics-and-family/patriot-express-passenger-pet-transport/.
You will need to arrange for your pet's transportation needs with the same care and attention you put into your other moving plans. Your pets are, after all, part of your family. Make sure your pets have current rabies tags and identification information on their collars. Keep a current photo of your pet with you in the event your pet becomes lost. Place your name, address and phone number (or a point of contact) on your pet as well as in the carrier.
If you are traveling by plane, make reservations as soon as possible. You will need an approved airline carrier, which you may purchase at most military exchanges and pet stores. Begin coordinating with the airlines early, so you know exactly what they require. Always keep in mind that airlines may restrict shipping pets during certain parts of the year, such as extreme cold or warm weather periods. Each airline carrier has its own rules regarding this issue.
Navy Lodge Bethesda allows pets. However, it requires a nonrefundable pet fee, rabies vaccination and owners must place pets in the crate for housekeeping safety. Feel free to call Navy Lodge at 301-654-1795 for additional information or to speak with the manager for pets weighing more than the 75 pounds weight policy.
While there is not a veterinary clinic within Naval Support Activity Bethesda, there are several clinics within the National Capital Region. Charges are subject to change, so contact the facility for current fee information. The closest clinic is located on Andrews Air Force Base. Visit their website https://phc.amedd.army.mil/organization/Pages/VtfDetails.aspx?VtfID=16 for more information.
To make an appointment (preferred) for veterinary services, call Andrews Air Force Base Veterinary Clinic at 240-857-2651.
