Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
Pet licensing and registration are required. Every dog, regardless of age, owned or harbored in New York State for longer than 30 days must be licensed in the town, city or village where the dog is being harbored. To license your pet go to the clerk of the town, city or, in some counties, village. The cost is approximately $4 to $15 annually.
Since laws vary around the country, contact a local veterinarian for information on rabies vaccination. In New York City, for example, the law requires all pets older than 3 months of age to be vaccinated for rabies. The first rabies vaccine must be followed by a vaccination a year later, and then every three years.
Air Mobility Command charter flights now ship pets on most of their flights as part of the normal service to DOD passengers. This service is provided by AMC to Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Panama, Newfoundland, the Azores, Guantanamo Bay, Japan and Guam. Pet shipment is limited to passengers in a PCS status only. Pets are defined as dogs and cats and restricted to a maximum of two pets per family.
There are limited pet spaces on all flights and reservations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis through the local transportation office. The passenger must provide an International Air Transport Association-approved container for pet shipment. IATA containers are available at many exchanges or retail stores. The passenger is also responsible for complying with all required documentation, immunizations and border clearance requirements and should be prepared to defray any associated costs.
There is no quarantine requirement.
There are no veterinary services available on the installation at Naval Support Activity Saratoga Springs.
