Any family member who is seeking to develop a personal career must tackle the problems imposed by frequent moves. Networking before you move as well as after you arrive at your new duty station can sometimes be the key to a successful job search. Here are some tips that may help:

• Update your resume.
• Update your list of professional and personal references. Ask their permission before including their names as references.
• Compile all college transcripts, certifications and certificates of completion for all training you have successfully completed.
• Ask your present employer if the company has a branch in the area where you are planning to relocate. A transfer may be possible.
• If you are working for a temporary agency, transfer your records to the new location so you do not lose employment credit.
• Talk to your friends, relatives or coworkers. They may have some ideas that can help.
• Check local newspapers for job leads and the employment environment.
• Contact local chambers of commerce for business listings.
• Contact local chapters of professional organizations.
• Check with state offices for the requirements for licensed or certified positions.
• Search the internet.
• Contact the Employment Readiness Program manager for assistance.

The Employment Readiness Program Manager can provide information to the following Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) programs offered to military Spouses: 

Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO): A program offered to all military Spouses through Military OneSource, which offers employment assistance with exploring portable career options; education, training, financial aid and state occupational license/credential requirements; career readiness to include interview skills, resume building, etc.

Military Spouse Career Advancement Account (MyCAA): A program offered to eligible military Spouses as part of the OSD, Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) program.

• Eligibility restricted to Spouses of active duty E1-E5, W1-W2, and O1-O2 serving on Title 10 orders

• Financial assistance limited to $4,000

• Financial assistance must be used three years from the start date of the first class

• Financial assistance may only be used for an associate degree, occupational license or credential
