All Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves to the Presidio of Monterey are command sponsored. Command sponsorship is important because it authorizes concurrent travel, which is defined as travel where family members and dependents accompany the service member to the permanent duty station and reside there. In addition, command approval allows the service member to post allowances at the at-dependent rate, on the dependents’ behalf, as a result of their residence in the vicinity of the service member’s permanent duty station. Additional benefits are post housing, increased weight allowance for household goods and government transportation for military family members upon PCS. The consequences of taking family members and dependents on a PCS tour that is not command sponsored is that family members are only entitled to certain privileges on post: ID card (DD 1173), access to medical and dental facilities, and post exchange and commissary privileges.
