Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
Veterinary Clinics
The Presidio of Monterey does not have a Vet Services on the installation. It is highly recommended for all incoming persons with pets to please call the facilities prior to taking your pet.
All pets residing within the Parks of Monterey Housing (Military base Housing) are required to register their pet with the Parks of Monterey Bay Housing Office. There is not a veterinary clinic on base, so you will have to find one in the local community. Vet clinic visits starting at $86. Rabies shots are $56 and microchip if wanted is $75
Some breeds of animals are not permitted in Base Housing nor on the military installation. Please contact the Parks of Monterey Bay for the complete list.

There are no quarantine mandates in California for cats and dogs.
Check with the Traffic Management Office for information about shipping pets, especially overseas. Some countries and Hawaii have quarantines. Airline approved pet carriers are available at the Post Exchange. Health certificates for travel are available at veterinary clinics located off base in the local Monterey community. Ask for military discounts!
The U.S. Department of War's new pet transportation policy for active-duty service members, effective Jan. 1, 2024, covers the cost of moving one household pet (either cat or dog) during a permanent change of station.
Reimbursement: Service members can receive up to $550 for PCS moves within the continental United States and up to $2,000 for moves outside CONUS.
Eligible expenses: The policy covers travel costs, quarantine fees, microchipping, boarding, hotel service charges, licensing fees, and shipping fees.
Eligibility: Service members may be eligible for reimbursement if they received PCS orders with an effective date of January 1, 2024, or later.
Documentation: Costs must be reasonable and substantiated, and service members may need to provide documentation like receipts.
Patriot Express: Service members can make reservations for Patriot Express travel through their local transportation office.
Pet health certificate: A pet health certificate verifies that a pet is up to date on vaccines and in good health for travel.
