If you’ve ever considered taking your education a step further, you should look to your installation for more information and assistance. They can help you decide if receiving an advanced degree is right for you, tell you which local colleges and classes are offered and find out if you’re eligible for tuition assistance. The Voluntary Education Center, or Installation Education Center, is available to help you put together a plan to advance your education.
Military spouses can also choose to engage with an education and career coach through the DoD’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, or SECO. These coaches can assist them in exploring multiple tools, resources and information to reach their educational goals. Federal and State governments as well as many other organizations do help with tuition assistance. Family members of active duty Soldiers may be eligible for spouse tuition assistance through Army Emergency Relief Scholarship Program, Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), National Military Family Association. Many scholarships are awarded through the colleges themselves; visit your school’s admissions and financial aid office for information on scholarships.
There are two Army Education centers located at Schofield Barracks and Tripler Army Medical Center that provide academic and vocational programs and services for Soldiers and adult Family members. Services offered include professional counseling, testing and instructional support. Programs and services include graduate and undergraduate college classes, basic skills programs, tuition assistance, Military Occupational Specialty libraries, computer labs, and apprenticeship programs. Classes are offered from a variety of Universities and colleges to include institutions and those on the mainland.
The Learning Resource Center located at the Schofield Education center has the following self-paced, independent study research, study materials, and practice tests via both textbooks and computer modes of study:
Adult Education classes are offered at the Wahiawa Community and Moanalua/Aiea School for Adults. They offer non-credit courses to any person over the age of 18. For students who did not finish high school, the Adult Community Schools offers a high school diploma program (GED), Beginning and word processing computer classes and English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
