If you need emergency assistance, you can expect to get help from your installation, your branch of service resources. There are programs to support you in a variety of situations, including victim assistance, emergencies en route and service-specific relief societies. Below, you’ll find types of assistance, contact information, and detailed procedures and guidance to help you through any tough circumstances that you or your family may face.
Be aware of agencies who may render aid, such as, nearby military facilities, Red Cross, Salvation Army, and, local hospitals in case of a medical emergency. For emergency assistance, several agencies and services are available; depending on the emergency circumstances. The Military and Family Support Center is a good starting point for Information and Referral to appropriate emergency-related services; to include Red Cross, Air Force Aid Society, Chaplain, Mental Health /Counseling, and others. Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS)-Lakehurst assists Active Duty, Retirees and Reservists (on extended duty for 30 days or more) with Emergency Financial Assistance in the form of interest free loans, grants as well as education programs. A brief summary of emegency financial assistance is: Emergency Transportation, Funeral Expenses, Medical/Dental Bills (patients share), Food, Rent, Utilities, Unforeseen Family Emergencies, Diaster Relief Assistance, Childcare Expenses, Essential Vehicle Repairs and other assistance approved by the Society. All assistance is evaluated on a case by case basis. You may visit the society's webpage at www.nmcrs.org for more information.
Financial Assistance at Lakehurst is by appointment only and is open during normal business hours, M-F. Please call 732-608-3444 and leave a message, a caseworker will return you call.
Lakehurst also offers Quick Assist Loans (no appointments needed) on Tuesday & Thursday, 0900-1300 and Thursday, 1300-1600. Quick Assist Loans are only for Active Duty Sailors and Marines and allow up to $500.00 of assistance for basic living expenses, temporary needs and family emergencies in a matter of minutes.

You may wish to check out the American Automobile Association (AAA) prior to departure, for assistance with automobile emergencies, and other travel assistance. Be sure your automobile is in good running condition, and, is prepared for minor mishaps such as flat tires, or dead batteries. In New Jersey and the surrounding region, the major interstates and turnpikes are well-traveled, and have emergency "call boxes" located frequently along the roadside; and, are well-patrolled by State Police.
*Although not an "emergency", keep in mind that New Jersey and the surrounding region does have many toll roads and bridges; keep in mind you will require extra money to cover this expense!

There are Air Force Aid Representatives located in the Military and Family Support Center who will assist you with an emergency financial need. They will assess each case and act accordingly. If an emergency happens while in transit go to the nearest military base (any branch of the service) for assistance. Additionally, The AFAS may pay up to 20 hours of free childcare (per child) for active duty Air Force members during the sixty days prior to a PCS move and within sixty days of arrival at JBMDL. Care is coordinated with and provided by a certified JBMDL Family Child Care provider. To get a voucher for Childcare for PCS, bring a copy of your orders to the Military and Family Support Center, 3435 Broidy Road.
The American Red Cross can also help in times of emergency. Quick communications with home regarding family emergencies are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including verification of death or serious illness of immediate family, birth announcements to fathers deployed overseas, and health and welfare reports resulting from a lack of communication over a long period of time. Be sure to have necessary documents, such as orders, passports, medical records, shot records, birth certificates, marriage licenses, maps, important phone numbers, and other necessary paperwork. Consider using traveler's checks, which unlike cash, may be reported and replaced if lost/stolen. Keep the phone numbers of credit card companies handy in case your cards are lost or stolen en route so you may report this quickly and avoid problems.
Be prepared! Always anticipate the possibility of an in-transit emergency.
Preparation--thinking ahead-- is the key in successfully handling in-transit emergencies.
