If you need emergency assistance, you can expect to get help from your installation, your branch of service resources. There are programs to support you in a variety of situations, including victim assistance, emergencies en route and service-specific relief societies. Below, you’ll find types of assistance, contact information, and detailed procedures and guidance to help you through any tough circumstances that you or your family may face.
Be aware of agencies that may render aid, such as nearby military facilities, Red Cross, Salvation Army and local hospitals, in case of a medical emergency. For emergency assistance, several agencies and services are available depending on the emergency circumstances. The Military & Family Readiness Center is a good starting point for information and referral to appropriate emergency-related services, to include Red Cross, Air Force Aid Society, chaplain, mental health services and counseling and others.
Navy Marine Corps Relief Society-Lakehurst assists active duty, retirees and their families as well as reservists who are on extended duty for 30 days or more with Emergency Financial Assistance in the form of interest-free loans, grants and education programs. A brief summary of emergency financial assistance includes emergency transportation, funeral expenses, medical and dental bills (patients share costs), food, rent, utilities, unforeseen family emergencies, disaster relief assistance, child care expenses, essential vehicle repairs and other assistance approved by the society. All assistance is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. You may visit the society's webpage at www.nmcrs.org for more information. Financial assistance at Lakehurst is by appointment only and is open during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. Call 732-608-3444 and leave a message. A caseworker will return your call.
Lakehurst NMCRS also offers quick assist loans (no appointments needed) walk-in are accepted during Thrift Store Open Hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Quick assist loans are only for active-duty Sailors and Marines and allow up to $1000 of assistance for basic living expenses, temporary needs and family emergencies in a matter of minutes.
Lakehurst NMCRS Thrift Store Hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. and Thursday from 11 to 4 p.m.

Automobile Emergency
You may wish to check out AAA prior to departure for assistance with automobile emergencies and other travel assistance. Be sure your automobile is in good running condition and is prepared for minor mishaps such as flat tires or dead batteries. In New Jersey and the surrounding region, the major interstates and turnpikes are well traveled, have emergency call boxes located frequently along the roadside and are well patrolled by state police.
Note: Although not an emergency, keep in mind that New Jersey and the surrounding region has many toll roads and bridges. You will need extra money to cover this expense, discuss it with your sponsor!
The Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program provides 24/7 sexual assault response capability for all active-duty member and dependents 18 years old and above. Once you contact the sexual assault response coordinator or SARC, you have the option to receive support to explain reporting options and if requested, meet you at the hospital for a medical evaluation. Financial Emergencies
When an unexpected financial problem occurs such as an emergency while in transit, please contact the American Red Cross 877-272-7337 and/or submit an application for financial assistance via the Air Force Aid Society Portal at https://afas.org/emergencyassistance/ You may also contact the nearest Military & Family Readiness Center (MFRC) and a staff member will provide you with guidance to work through the problem. Free PCS Childcare
AFAS may pay up to 20 hours of free childcare (per child) for active-duty Air Force members during the 60 days prior to a PCS move and within 60 days of arrival at JB MDL. Care is coordinated with and provided by a certified JB MDL Family Childcare Provider, subject to availability. To receive a voucher for Childcare for PCS, bring a copy of your orders to the MFRC, 3435 Broidy Road, JB MDL, NJ 08641.
The American Red Cross can also help in times of an emergency. Quick communications with home regarding family emergencies are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including verification of death or serious illness of immediate family, birth announcements to fathers deployed overseas, and health and welfare reports resulting from a lack of communication over a long period of time. The Red Cross can be reached 24 hours a day at 877-272-7337.
Hand-carry necessary documents such as PCS orders, passports, medical records, immunization records, birth certificates, marriage licenses, maps, important phone numbers, etc. Consider using traveler's checks, which unlike cash, may be reported and replaced if lost/stolen. Keep the phone numbers of credit card companies handy in case your cards are lost or stolen en-route so you may report issues quickly and avoid problems. Be prepared! Always anticipate the possibility of an in-transit emergency and know how to contact your losing and gaining commands.
