Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), as one of only two Federally-operated school systems, is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, educating and managing prekindergarten through 12th grade educational programs. DoDEA employs approximately 15,000 employees who serve more than 70,000 students of active duty military, military connected and DoD civilian families. DoDEA is committed to ensuring that all school-aged children of military families are provided the opportunity to receive a competitive education, which will help prepare them for postsecondary education and/or future career success in our 21st century globalized society.
The Iwakuni DoDEA Schools Complex, which expanded in 2017, is comprised of four schools:
Matthew C. Perry Primary School provides quality programming to ensure student success from pre-school through 2nd grade. Some of the programs and services provided are Pre-kindergarten, Pre-School Children with Disabilities Program, Gifted Education, Special Education Services, English as a Second Language Program, Counseling and Psychological Services, School Nurse, Information Center (Library), and Educational Technologist (Computer Labs). Matthew C. Perry Primary opened its doors to serve both children and families in 1955 with only four classroom teachers. In 2017, we became a primary school, serving the youngest students in the community. We now have 21 classrooms and employ 57 faculty and staff.
Iwakuni Intermediate School serves students in grades 3 through 5 and opened with an enrollment of approximately 270 students. The school opened for the 2017-2018 school year on Wednesday, August 30th, 2017 - and held an official ribbon cutting on Monday, October 2nd, 2017. Our staff is dedicated to cultivating lifelong learners who develop into productive citizens and valuing the diversity around them. Iwakuni Intermediate School provides a nurturing learning environment that is data-driven and student-centered providing rich educational experiences. We collaboratively foster a positive learning environment that embraces student achievement, promotes respect for all stakeholders, encourages open communication, and celebrates accomplishments. Here at Iwakuni Intermediate School we realize that we are shaping our future leaders, therefore; we strive to "Educate, Engage, and Empower each student to succeed in a dynamic world."
Iwakuni Middle School consists of grades 6 through 8, built around the team concept where four or five teachers in the four core subject areas share all of the students in that grade level. We offer a wide range of elective classes and look forward to adding more as our student enrollment continue to expand. We have an excellent, caring staff who understands the academic, social, and emotional challenges of young teenagers, to help our students navigate through these most influential years. We have a knowledgeable counselor and supporting administrative staff, who work with the teachers and both individual and small groups of students to foster a welcoming and caring environment. Middle school is a very enthusiastic environment, especially when you have over 230 teens trying to identify who they are, all while maneuvering through the social and physical development changes in their young lives. We understand these barriers and will endure the challenges of assisting our teens with transitioning to the next stage in their lives. We look forward to working with each student to help them with transitioning from elementary school to high school.
Matthew C. Perry High School comprises grades 9 through 12 with approximately 220 students and a faculty and staff of 37 educators. The school provides a general and compatible education curriculum like that of high school in the United States, with college preparatory courses, electives, and a technology education (CTE) program for students who wish to explore in a work environment during the school day. The educational staff of Matthew C. Perry High School is committed to investing in each students learning and making their experience rewarding and momentous. We pride our school in competitive enough to know every student and dedicating endless support to assist them with achieving the goal of earning a quality education. We will support each student with obtaining the necessary and required tools and knowledge to successfully pursue their educational goals beyond high school. Additionally, "to be among the World's leaders in education, enriching the lives of military connected students and the communities in which they live", we must seek to understand and embrace our environment. As we fulfill our respective responsibilities, you will progress towards adulthood, and we will benefit by your ultimate contributions to society. We welcome the opportunity to work with you as we learn to grow together. Together we rise!
