When planning for a move with the military, you might consider moving into government housing. Government housing is owned and maintained by the Department of Defense and is typically on the installation. Eligibility and availability for this type of housing may vary by service member, family size and installation. Learn more about the different options, benefits and discounts that may be available to you through government housing.
Eligibility:
All military members on accompanied orders with accompanying family members and area clearance/dependent entry approval, as well as U.S. civilians who are on a transportation agreement (DD Form 1617) and who receive a Living Quarters Allowance are mandatory if the capacity is below 90%.
Accompanying bona fide family members are those family members who have bona fide dependent status and are included on your command sponsorship approval/area clearance/dependent entry approval, and will reside with the sponsor for nine consecutive months or more each year. Joint custody of children does not make someone eligible for family housing. An unmarried military member with joint legal custody of dependent children and physical custody for more than 9 months per year is eligible for Family Housing . Family Housing will review the court order or settlement document with the application for government quarters to determine custody periods.
Advance applications will be accepted but will not advance into the freeze zone until member physically arrives on station.
Members must check in with the Family Housing Office within two working days of arrival with a copy of endorsed original orders and area clearance/dependent entry approval. If member is traveling non-concurrent, member must show an itinerary indicating that family members will arrive within 45 days before a housing offer can be made. If member checks in after 30 days, the control date will be the date when member checks into the Housing Office and provides a copy of order, area clearance and housing application. The last day that all documents have been received will be the established control date.
All family housing government quarters are equipped with dishwasher, stove, refrigerator, washer/dryer, and air conditioning and heat. Military family housing waiting list is maintained for each MFH designation. The waiting list is maintained by pay grade and numbers of bedrooms (two, three and four). The first available unit in the member's designation will be offered, regardless of having a pet.
Please keep in mind that you may be required to live off station when you first arrive if housing is not available. If you or your family members have special needs (for example, wheelchair, walker/cane, other disabilities, etc.) please contact us as soon as you have orders or expect to report to Iwakuni. This is an overseas command and all needs may not be accommodated.
The Family Housing Office has an off-base referral branch that can assist all authorized personnel who will be living on the local economy. The referral specialists assist in lease negotiations, translation services, rental accounts, and utility services.
There is a two-pet policy on station for family housing residents, which is a conditional privilege. You can have two dogs, two cats, or a cat and a dog. Dogs are not allowed above the second floor in the mid-rises. Even though members are authorized to bring their pets to Iwakuni, it is not recommended. It is difficult at best to find off-base housing that will accept cats. Also, dogs need to be exercised and there is very little space either on or off base to do this. The yards are "postage stamp" size. Many families who have brought their pets, especially dogs, realized after arrival that they have put themselves at a disadvantage.
Application
Members applying for government quarters must be on a command-sponsored accompanied tour and must provide a copy of their web orders/orders, tour conversions (as appropriate), area clearance/dependent entry approval and port-call date (if member is traveling non-concurrent) for dependents.
To apply for housing, fill in and submit Form DD1746/web orders/orders, area clearance/dependent entry approval. All applicants are placed on a waiting list by their established application control date.

Pets
Non-domestic or exotic animals as pets: All non-domestic or exotic animals including but not limited to snakes, chickens, ducks, lizards, ferrets, monkeys, reptiles and tarantulas are not permitted in government-owned housing. Raising birds and fish for commercial purposes is prohibited.
Due to the limited veterinary services at Iwakuni, only domesticated pets (for example, dogs, cats, small birds or fish) should be brought to Japan.
There is no special consideration given to those who choose to bring their pet(s) to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni.
The pet owner is responsible for transporting the animal and for any expenses incurred. If an animal is travel-ready (10 pounds or less and in a kennel/cage), it may travel with you on the Shinkansen (bullet train) for a small fee or may travel on a freight train.
When buying tickets, you must go to the ticket window, not the ticket machine, and ask for a Temawari-hin ticket for each animal. Weight of animal and carrier must be less than 10 kilograms, carrier must be less than 70 centimeters long and height must be less than 90 centimeters. Pet entry preparations need to begin seven months before arrival in Japan.
Sponsors are responsible for the behavior of their pets and must ensure their pets do not become a nuisance or menace to other pets, persons or property. Any pet demonstrating aggressive behavior will be immediately and permanently removed from the air station. To report pet neglect, abuse, biting, nuisance and destruction of property, sponsors should contact the Housing Office and the Military Police. Small birds, fish, hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs that are properly caged in a domicile designed for their habitation are allowed in government-owned housing. Breeding any animals for any purpose is strictly prohibited. Pet misbehavior includes but is not limited to scattering trash, depositing feces on premises not assigned to the owner and pets running loose. The impound section of the Provost Marshall Office enforces air station regulations governing animals and pets. Dogs are allowed in any mid-rise tower on the first two floors only. Two cats (spayed or neutered) are allowed in any tower unit. Documentation of spaying or neutering is required to be provided to the Housing Office. Two pets are permitted in all single-family homes (for example, row houses, town houses, duplexes, etc.). All pets are required to be registered with the local Veterinary Service Office and the Housing Office.
Prohibited Dog Breeds: Per III MEF/MCIPC 10570.1 DOMESTIC ANIMAL REGISTRATION AND CONTROL , pit bulls, Rottweiler’s, chow chows, Doberman pinchers, and canid/wolf hybrids or any canine breed with dominant traits of aggression present an unreasonable risk to the health and safety of personnel on the air station. Consequently, full or mixed breeds of the aforementioned dogs are prohibited aboard MCAS Iwakuni. In the absence of formal breed identification (for example, certification by a civilian organization such as the American Kennel Club) a U.S. Army Veterinary Corps officer or a licensed civilian veterinarian must determine the majority breed of the dog in question. For more information on banned dog breeds, please contact the Housing Office. Final determination will be made by the U.S. Veterinary Corps officer assigned to MCASI.
Conditions of pet ownership: Sponsors with pets must comply with the following conditions:
Restraint of Pets (Outdoors)
Committing nuisance: Pet-owning sponsors shall ensure that their pets are cleaned up after, removing all excrement upon release. If a violation occurs, the sponsor shall immediately remove any feces and deposit in a properly designated receptacle. Feces can be put into the burn bags of home refuse containers, properly wrapped in doggie bags for that specific action. Common grounds and public areas (for example, athletic fields, playgrounds and parks) shall not be used as dog exercise areas or dog runs. Pets are not allowed to run loose on the air station at any time, and sponsors must ensure their pets do not get loose or chase after other pets or people. Citations for misbehavior will result in the removal of the nuisance animal.
Stray/loose animals: All stray/loose animals should be reported to PMO. The Housing Office does not have the means to capture or contain stray animals.
Death of pets. If a pet you own has died, it is strictly forbidden to bury the pet on any MCASI property. Japan Environmental Governing Standards forbid burying animals, and carcasses are considered biological waste products. Please contact the U.S. Army Veterinary Services at DSN 315-253-6471 on board MCAS Iwakuni.
