Beaufort is considered a high cost living area and you are encouraged to shop the area before you decide to sign any rental agreements or contracts pertaining to living accommodations. Check with housing to place your name on the housing list once you have checked in. The closer you are to base, the higher the cost due to the convenience of the location. When selecting a rental in town, ensure that there is a military clause in the rental agreement. Contact the Military Housing Office at 843-228-2853 for average cost of living, utility cost and assistance with on and off base housing.
Car Insurance
If your automobile is financed, South Carolina State Laws require having full automobile coverage. If the automobile has a free and clear title (no further money is owed on the vehicle) the owner may simply choose liability insurance.
Health Insurance
It is advised that health insurance coverage is maintained with the last duty station until checking into the gaining command. This will allow for continued coverage while traveling. If the insurance is canceled prior to checking into the new duty station and an accident occurs during travel, there is a possibility of not being medically covered. Check with your current insurance carrier to ensure policy compliance.
