Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
The base restricts on-base housing occupants to two pets only. Upon arrival, occupants must register their pets with the base veterinarian. For more information, contact the base Veterinary Services at 208-828-2221.
You can transport most pets via air as carry-on baggage, checked baggage, or unaccompanied cargo. The pet must be in a carrier that is large enough for them to stand up and turn around 360 degrees in. Costs associated with each of these modes depend upon the airline, size and number of pets, itinerary and special needs. Furthermore, sky-bound pets must be up to date on all shots and will need a Certificate of Health from a veterinarian. If traveling by car, pets require stops, exercise, food, water and pet-friendly lodging along the way. Be sure to carry an excess of food and water for pets as well as passengers, and expect extra lodging costs and deposits as you seek out pet-friendly accommodations. Take care to contain pets to a safe area of the vehicle, ideally in a crate or cage, and never leave pets in a vehicle unattended for long periods of time or without proper ventilation. Always be sure to build in extra time for unexpected stops or illness along the way.
There are no quarantine requirements at Mountain Home AFB.
There are a limited number of boarding facilities for your pet in the local area. Mountain Home is a very small rural community; boarding facilities are very limited and may not have all the amenities of larger cities. Call and talk to the boarders if you have concerns for your pets' well-being. If arriving after normal duty hours, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, make arrangements prior to your arrival. There are limited temporary lodging facilities available to house pets.
At this time there is no permanant installation veterinarian on station that can assist with the basic care of your animals. There is a veterinarian that comes in on TDY basis at certain intervals, but do not expect to use their services on a regular basis.
Contact the base Veterinary Services at 208-828-2221 for specific questions on services available in the local area.
