If you need emergency assistance, you can expect to get help from your installation, your branch of service resources. There are programs to support you in a variety of situations, including victim assistance, emergencies en route and service-specific relief societies. Below, you’ll find types of assistance, contact information, and detailed procedures and guidance to help you through any tough circumstances that you or your family may face.

Carry your important documents (PCS orders, ID cards, birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce certificates, passports, household goods inventory, privately owned vehicle packet, etc.) with you. Do not pack in your luggage or household goods! Annotate telephone numbers for your relatives, your sponsor and your gaining command. They will be invaluable in case of an emergency while traveling.
Navy Marine Corps Relief Society provides financial assistance for basic needs or emergencies with confidentiality. This includes emergency leave travel, basic living expenses, household setup, car repairs, funeral expenses, disaster relief, pay problems and much more. You can contact the NSGB Navy Marine Corps Relief Society representative, at 757-458-4141.
The American Red Cross can also help in times of emergency. Emergency communication messages are sent to service members regarding family emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling the Hero Care Center at 877-272-7337. These emergency communication services can also be initiated by visiting www.redcross.org/herocarenetwork or by using the Hero Care mobile app. The Red Cross also provides disaster relief, community disaster education, international humanitarian services, first aid and CPR training, and volunteer opportunities.
The American Red Cross coordinates efforts with Navy Marine Corps Relief Society regarding financial assistance for military personnel, immediate families and retirees in the form of interest-free loans or grants when a loan would place a greater hardship on the family. Examples of need for financial assistance are emergency leave expenses for the service person or his/her family member; for family necessities which may result when an allotment check is not received or delayed; for personal needs of an essential and emergency nature; and for convalescent leave expenses.
