Financial readiness educational opportunities range from basic planning to long-term investing. Check out the information below to see what’s available at your installation.
Personal Financial Management Program at the Sheppard Military and Family Readiness Center provides financial counselors who can help you with any aspect of your personal finances including making a permanent change of station and setting up a new budget, car buying, investment opportunities, and financial problems you may be experiencing. It's a good idea to see the financial counselor at your losing base to discuss your new budget especially if there will be a loss of income due to the military spouse losing his or her job.
If you are coming to Sheppard AFB as your first permanent-duty assignment, your first two weeks will be spent at the First Term Airmen Center. There will be a block of instruction on financial matters at the M&FRC during that time.
If you are E-4 or below, and Sheppard AFB is a second or subsequent permanent duty station, you will be scheduled for a financial class at the M&FRC as well. You will be informed of the time during your in-processing with your commander's support staff.
The cost of living in the Wichita Falls area is 16% lower than the national average. Homes can range in price from $50,000 to well over $500,000. The median home price is $249,146. Liability insurance must be carried by all drivers in Texas. State law requires that seat belts must be worn at all times in vehicles.
Temporary Living Allowance is available for incoming members who have not secured housing upon arrival to Sheppard AFB. Drawing Advance Pay is a possibility when relocating; however, this could create a hardship on service members by reducing monthly income significantly.
Advance Pay requests must be approved by your squadron commander, and approval should not be assumed. Call the Finance Office at 940-676-4864 for further information.
