PERSONAL AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
1000 Ellsworth Street
Ellsworth AFB, SD 57706
Resources are available to help you understand and manage your finances, including one-on-one financial counseling to assist you and your family with financial readiness. Services are designed to focus on money management issues throughout your active-duty lifecycle and into retirement. Financial readiness educational opportunities range from basic planning to long-term investing. Check out the information below to see what’s available at your installation.
Financial guidance is offered to individuals and families who want to be in control of their finances or for those who need help with the "out-of-control" money difficulties. Contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center for assistance with personal financial management.
Sometimes service people take advance pay prior to departing for their PCS. Remember, you have to pay the money back. You are encouraged to refrain from taking an advance pay until you arrive at this base. That way you will have sufficient funds to pay rent, utility deposits, security deposits, and pet deposits. By waiting until you arrive at this station to take an advance, you are not tempted to finance your leave instead of getting established in housing. Also, taking advance pay sometimes causes subsequent financial hardship. Have your sponsor send you a copy of the Rapid City Journal so that you can get a feel for the local area economy.
Pre-departure CostsSome pre-departure costs could include, but not limited to, repair/replacement or cleaning of current residence, temporary lodging, child care, pet expenses, and vehicle repair/maintenance.
Leave enroute will be at your expense and charged to you as leave days; fuel and repairs for transportation is included in the mileage allowance paid to you.
Arrival and Settling-in Costs:
These are inevitable out of pocket costs with moving--temporary lodging*, food, rent, security deposits, utility hook-up fees, child care, vehicle insurance and registration (possible increase), new home preparation (re-stocking food, cleaning supplies, curtains/drapes, rugs/carpet, furniture, paint, appliances, renter's insurance.)
*In particular, the month of August marks the peak of high-season tourism. A dramatic increase in tourists alluring special events occurs in August. It can be extremely difficult to locate temporary quarters within close proximity of the base, and costs can be much higher than anticipated.
If you are traveling with a pet(s), make sure you allow for the costs of kenneling/boarding along the way. There are only a few pet-friendly units available for reservation at Ellsworth. You may need an alternate arrangement for your pets if those units are not available.
