Temporary Housing

You may stay at the Landmark Inn when you first get here, depending on availability. This is the only hotel on post. Your next option is to stay at a hotel/motel in Barstow. You may continue staying at the Landmark if housing is not available right away, but this can be costly. Non-availability statements are not required in order to be reimbursed for temporary lodging if you stay in a motel in Barstow. Save your receipts. Commercial motels/hotels in California charge a 10% Transient Occupancy Tax to guests staying in their facilities. Military members are not exempt from paying this tax. The Landmark Inn,760-386-4040, is located on the installation and is the only hotel within 35 miles of Fort Irwin.

The Landmark has a total of 179 rooms, including standard accommodations, suites and handicapped facilities. All rooms come with a refrigerator, a microwave, a coffee maker, an iron and ironing board and free wireless internet. It offers a continental breakfast daily 6 to 9 a.m. The hotel has a 24-hour business center with one desktop computers for guest use. There is a guest laundry that is open 24 hours a day and the courtyard with a large barbecue area and a playground for children. For indoor relaxation, it offers a large living room area off the main lobby with intimate seating and a 52-inch plasma television, with a full satellite package .

Landmark Inn room rates start at the government per diem of $120 and the tax rate is 7%. It also offers substantially reduced rates for families during a permanent change of station. In order to qualify for tax exemption, a copy of your orders must be presented at check-in, or room payment must be made with a government-issued credit card. All major credit cards are accepted but personal checks are not. All reservations must be guaranteed with a credit card to confirm the reservation, but are not charged until check-in. Cancelations must be received no later than 24 hours prior to the day of arrival or the Landmark will assess a cancelation fee equal to one night's room rent. If a reservation is not canceled and the guest does not arrive, you will be charged a no-show fee. Check-in time is 3 p.m. check-out is 1100.

Due to Fort Irwin's remote location, the demands for accommodations at the Landmark are very high. During rotations, the hotel is often sold out months in advance. Because the Landmark is a privately owned business and not a government entity, it is not in a position to set priorities for who will be allowed to reserve rooms. The Landmark works diligently with Army Community Services and the housing office to make sure rooms are available for PCS families, but no preference or allowance is shown for rank, assignment or contractors.

There are several restaurants in walking distance of the hotel, both sit down and fast food. The commissary is close by and can be used by those with a military identification card. In-room refrigerators and microwaves, along with the grilling facilities in the courtyard may be used for storing and preparing food, but fire code expressly forbids the use of cooking appliances in the guest rooms.

Pets are only allowed at the hotel with a two-pet limit. Pet fee of $50.00, and pet exemption is granted.  Management encourages all pet owners to utilize Paws and Claws which is located just a few blocks from the hotel. If the kennel is at capacity or it cannot take your pets for other reasons, it may provide you with a statement of non-availability.

The recreational facilities at Fort Irwin are open to all hotel guests and most are within walking distance. This includes the fitness center, a public pool, playgrounds, a running track, a bowling alley and a movie theater.
