Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
Animals entering the U.S. from a foreign country may be subject to regulation by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) as all well as other federal agencies. Visit the USDA website to determine current criteria. All pets residing on post must be registered with the Veterinarian Treatment Facility (VTF), be current on vaccinations and be microchipped. Failure to comply will result in the loss of VTF privileges until proper documentation is provided.
Chatham County, in which Hunter Army Airfield is located, requires all dogs and cats which have become three months of age shall be vaccinated and all dogs and cats over one year of age shall be vaccinated and annually thereafter against rabies and their owner shall obtain a license for such dogs or cats every 12 months following the original annual vaccination and licensing of dogs or cats. The license and vaccination tag should be attached to the collar around the neck.
Make sure your pet is in overall good health before traveling and that shots and vaccinations are current. If you are transporting your animal by air, check with the airline you plan to use to get specific information on travel requirements and restrictions for animals. Animal transportation may be restricted in the summer due to high temperatures or inclement weather. Occasionally, small pets can be shipped on military flights but availability and regulations are always changing as well as fees.
No pet boarding is available on HAAF. However, pet boarding is available on Fort Stewart, where you will do in-processing.
Fort Stewart Boarding services and doggie daycare is available on the Fort Stewart installation. Cost for boarding is $22 per night for dogs and $15 per night for cats. Cost variation depends on animal's size, species, and if it is neutered or spayed. It is important to make boarding arrangements prior to arrival in the area to make sure space is available.
