If you’ve ever considered taking your education a step further, you should look to your installation for more information and assistance. They can help you decide if receiving an advanced degree is right for you, tell you which local colleges and classes are offered and find out if you’re eligible for tuition assistance. The Voluntary Education Center, or Installation Education Center, is available to help you put together a plan to advance your education.
Military spouses can also choose to engage with an education and career coach through the DoD’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, or SECO. These coaches can assist them in exploring multiple tools, resources and information to reach their educational goals. Contact the MCRD Education Office, Building 111, for information about adult-continuing education courses available aboard the Depot. They can be reached by calling 619-524-8158 or 619-524-1275.
Among the colleges and universities offering on-site day and night classes aboard MCRD San Diego are National University and Columbia College.
Contact the Education Office for additional information or assistance regarding your particular college curriculum, schedules for classes taught aboard the Depot, or information on other colleges in the greater San Diego area.
Among the local colleges/universities are; San Diego State University, University of California - San Diego, San Diego University, San Diego Community College System (Mesa, Miramar, City) Grossmont-Cuyamaca College(s), Southwestern College.
Other areas of interest may include; Tuition Assistance for Active Duty Marines/Navy, SMART Recommended Credits for Military Experiences, Non-Traditional Distance Learning Programs, Credit by Examination (CLEP/DSST/Excelsior), Apprenticeship Programs, and information and referral for Financial Aid Information for Family Members/Civilian Employees with proper registration, manual DSST / CLEP / Excelsior tests can be administered on base at the Education Center.
Exams are FREE to active duty service members. Computerized CLEP tests can be arranged through the education services office; call 619-524-8158 for more information. ASVAB, DLPT, AND DLAB military exams can be arranged/administered through the Depot's Recruit Administration Branch.
