Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
No quarantine on pets is currently in effect in the Key West area. However, because of the tropical climate, pets have more trouble with parasites, etc., so increased visits to the vet can be expected. Rabies vaccines are required annually in Monroe County due to the local wild raccoon population. Hand carry the animal's shot records just as you would your families' records. Additionally their are several restrictions on certain breeds of dogs that are not allowed in base housing, please see the house section for specific guidance.
Once you have decided that an animal is going to be your traveling companion, plan for your pet's trip in the same way you plan your own - WELL IN ADVANCE.
It is suggested arrangements be made before your arrival to Key West. The Morale, Welfare and Recreation rentals and Navy Lodge allow two pets up to forty-five pounds. You may find a large nonrefundable deposit is required at some hotels in the area. Boarding facilities in the Keys are limited and fees vary depending on the animal’s weight. Calculate this substantial cost in your anticipated budget if you have a pet.
There are no restrictions to bringing pets to the Key West area. However, the following rules apply to military housing areas. Dogs, cats, and birds and fish are permitted in quarters, if properly registered, controlled and cared for. Occupants are limited to a total of two pets. in number. Dogs and cats kept outside on a chain/rope, are not to be tied to the front of the quarters, near the front entrance or near the mailbox. Occupants are prohibited from keeping rabbits, pigeons, doves, poultry, wild animals, ferrets, raccoons, snakes, rats, mice, etc. The breeding or raising of animals for sale is prohibited. The following breeds of dogs are prohibited while living in military housing areas; Pitt bulls, Akitas, American Bulldogs, Chows, Dobermans and Rottweilers.
Pets must be registered to reside in government quarters. Bring a copy of current rabies vaccination. A Naval Air Station Key West registration tag will be issued and is good for one year.
All dogs are to be on a leash when walking on all base installations.
There is a dog park located on Sigsbee that is fenced in and allows dogs to run free. Owners are encouraged to stay with your dog while visiting that facility and clean up after your pet.
