The Housing Services Office, located at 4250 Gen. Jim Moore Blvd. at the Ord Military Community (formerly Fort Ord) is the liaison between Department of Defense personnel and Monterey Bay Military Housing. Their hours are 7:45 a.m.-4: 45 p.m., Monday-Friday, and can be reached at831-242-7979/5702. If you can call Government housing before calling the Parks of Monterey Bay.
The Parks at Monterey Bay offers just over 2,500 family housing units in two residential areas, Fort Ord and La Mesa. Call 831-644-0400 for availability. Housing at these communities supports military members from many local commands, including the Naval Postgraduate School and the Defense Language Institute.
Application and Eligibility
As soon as you receive orders, you should contact a Government housing at 831-242-7979 for instructions on how to apply for government housing before calling the Parks of Monterey Bay at 831-644-0400. Assignment to housing is determined by military rank (pay grade) and family size. All assignments are allowed a maximum of two persons per bedroom. Medical proof of pregnancy qualifies as a dependent.
Availability
At this time, there is a waiting list for government housing that could be up to 90 days. Your position on the wait list is determined by the detachment date from your current command. A house-hunting trip is strongly recommended to survey suitable lodging and availability if you do not plan on living in government housing there is many options in town, however they are normally at a high price..
Exceptional Family Member Housing
If you are enrolled in the Exception Family Member Program, contact the Residential Communities Initiative at the Parks 831-644-0400 prior to your arrival. If you have not contacted RCI, you will be redirected to the RCI office upon arrival. If a prospect who does not have the physical requirement for an Americans with Disabilities Act home chooses to accept an ADA home, they are required to sign an ADA addendum recognizing that they will need to move at their own cost.
The cost of living in the Monterey Peninsula is high, and housing is among the most expensive in the country. Affordable off-post housing is limited. Rental properties in the Monterey Peninsula area cost $1,550-$2,400 for an unfurnished one-bedroom apartment, to $2,500-$3,500 or more for a house. Most landlords do not accept pets, and those who do normally charge $200-$300 per pet, in addition to deposits, plus a monthly charge. Generally, expect to pay the first and last month’s rent up front, or a deposit plus the rent.
The Housing Services Office is your contact for any problems you may encounter, including discrimination complaints, tenant/landlord disputes or any questions or problems about off-post housing. The Housing Services Office may also provide information regarding the communities in which a rental is located as many will list a property with the government housing housing office on move.mil. If you will be living off-post in a rental property, you should purchase a renters or tenants insurance policy. Your landlord’s insurance does not protect your belongings, only the structure/dwelling. A typical policy costs about $150 per year, and may be required by your lease agreement.
