It’s likely that employment will change when a move occurs, especially for military spouses. The information below will provide you with employment assistance information and resources available such as SECO, MyCAA and MSEP Portals.
Employment opportunities are available. An individual’s specific situation, level of persistence and flexibility greatly influence job search success.
Available positions vary in type, location and pay. Types of jobs include general schedule, non-appropriated fund, and contract. The majority of family member employees work is on either the Support Site or Capodichino base. There is a spouse preference system in place to assist family members with gaining employment. The preference rank is as follows:
It is essential to note the spouse preference system is a tool to facilitate employment for spouses. It can be a handy tool; however, you must understand the rules of the system entirely before applying for positions, as it can also be restrictive. In addition, Federal resumes and application processes are different than the traditional, private sector process. It is recommended that job seekers take advantage of NSA Naples Fleet & Family Support Center workshops and one on one assistance pertaining to Federal employment and the USA Jobs system.
Often, the child and youth programs, Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the Navy Exchange are actively recruiting. Also, the Department of Defense Education Activity maintains a pool of substitute teachers to call on throughout the school year. A high school diploma is the only requirement for substituting. Prospective employees need to realize that shortages experienced by specific career fields (i.e., health care) in the United States are not indicative of abundant, open positions in Naples.
The Status of Forces Agreement prohibits military and civilian dependents from seeking employment on the Italian economy. The SOFA also dictates the number of positions on the base that must be filled by local, national employees. Individuals who are non-U.S. citizens, hold dual citizenship in the U.S and Italy or are family members of contracted employees are not eligible to work in GS, APF, NAF, NEX or MWR positions.

Gaining employment in Naples can be more challenging than in the U.S. The Status of Forces Agreement between Italy and the U.S. prohibits military and Department of Defense spouses from seeking employment off-base. Many good prospects do exist on each of the base locations at all experience levels. For more information, contact the Fleet and Family Support Center for employment assistance information.
