Housing Referral Office – The HRO can assist you with community housing options. If you are coming to Naval Support Facility Indian Head, off-base housing in the local community near the base is very limited and expensive. Temporary housing is also limited to motels and hotels off base. It is recommended you use your command sponsor help locate a place to live and/or not bring your family until you have arranged for suitable housing. All military personnel must report to the base housing referral office prior to entering an agreement to obtain off-base housing.
The HRO is also one of your contacts for any problems you may encounter, including discrimination complaints, tenant-landlord disputes or any questions or problems about off-base housing. The HRO will provide a list of rentals with corresponding locator maps as well as information regarding the communities in which the rentals are located. Ask about the availability of the Maryland Rental Partnership Program if you are planning to rent.
All renters should carry renters insurance against fire, theft and other damages. The property owner's insurance will cover the property but not the renter's personal property. If you currently have renters insurance, you may transfer your coverage after you arrive.
Less expensive housing, both in rental and purchase price, can be found by commuting within a range of 15-60 miles of Indian Head. Indian Head is considered part of the Washington metro area; therefore, the cost of homes will be above average market price.
Where you choose to live is a highly personal matter, and you need to consider your needs and preferences as well as those of your family. We suggest you visit the area, drive around and talk to people who already live here. If you plan on house-hunting temporary duty travel, consider contacting a realtor to show you around the available properties. Regardless of what you choose to do, the HRO should be your first stop. They can provide information on housing availability and lists of housing in the area tailored to your needs. They can tell you about the Maryland RPP which allows military personnel to waive security deposits and, in some cases, receive below-market rental fees.
There are no mobile home lots on base; however, several are available in the local area.
Single service member housing is limited at Naval Support Facility Indian Head. For assistance, contact the Housing Office at 301-744-4317.
Visit InMyArea.com to search for utility providers based on your zip code. This website serves as a one-stop shop where you can explore your options, compare prices and purchase services.
