Shipping Pets

Military members with pets housed on base must register the pet with the veterinary office within one week of arrival. To register pets, current inoculation certificates are required. Texas requires annual rabies vaccinations, which may be obtained at the animal disease prevention and control facility.

There is no quarantine for pets arriving from overseas locations if the pet owner has: 1) stated that the pet has no diseases; 2) a statement from a veterinarian that the pet has no diseases; 3) current rabies tag.

Pet Transportation Allowance

If you are flying with your pet, you must book pet travel through the Traffic Management Office (TMO), or get a non-availability letter from TMO in order to be eligible for the Pet Transportation Allowance. Currently, servicemembers may be reimbursed for up to $550 for stateside moves and up to $2,000 for overseas moves under the Joint Travel Regulation paragraph 050107.

Costs eligible for reimbursement include:

• Mandatory Microchipping
• Boarding Fees
• Hotel Service Charges
• Licensing fees at new location
• Shipping fees
• Quarantine fees (OCONUS only)
• Antibody titer level testing (OCONUS only)

Members must have itemized receipts with the pet’s name when possible in order to receive reimbursement.

*NOTE* Members may only receive the Pet Transportation Allowance for ONE pet, defined as either a cat or dog owned for personal companionship.

It is a good idea to make advanced reservations at a local kennel for pets as soon as you know your arrival date. There are no kennels on base and there are a limited amount of pet friendly houses in billeting.

Animals are seen by appointment only for vaccinations, heartworm testing, fecal examinations and minor health care. Contact Fort Sill Veterinary Clinic to schedule an appointment. Please email fortsill.veterinarybranch@gmail.com let them know you are stationed at Sheppard AFB and need an appointment. • Appointment Scheduling: The best way to schedule an appointment is by calling their office directly. Currently, they are booking appointments 2-3 weeks in advance.
• Services Offered: The office provides routine care, routine surgeries, and dental cleanings. However, due to the limited staff, they are only able to schedule two surgeries per month. Note that dental cleanings are considered a surgery since pets are typically put under anesthesia for the procedure.
• OCONUS Health Certificates: They do offer OCONUS health certificate appointments, but availability is subject to the booking timeline mentioned above.
• Non-Urgent Visits: The office is currently only able to see non-urgent routine visits or routine sick visits (e.g., allergies or conditions that do not require same-day attention).
• Recommendations: They encourage individuals to reach out if they are interested in seeking care at their facility. However, they emphasize the importance of having a local veterinarian as they cannot guarantee availability of care at this time and it is best to have a local established vet in case of emergencies.
