If you’ve ever considered taking your education a step further, you should look to your installation for more information and assistance. They can help you decide if receiving an advanced degree is right for you, tell you which local colleges and classes are offered and find out if you’re eligible for tuition assistance. The Voluntary Education Center, or Installation Education Center, is available to help you put together a plan to advance your education.
Military spouses can also choose to engage with an education and career coach through the DoD’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, or SECO. These coaches can assist them in exploring multiple tools, resources and information to reach their educational goals. The Education Center is located in building 1530 on 6th Street. It offers weekly briefs on the Post 9-11 GI Bill and military tuition assistance. Contact the Education Center at 760-830-6881 for financial aid information and local area colleges and universities.
Testing
The Military Classification Testing Program includes the Armed Forces Classification Test, Defense Language Proficiency Tests and the Defense Language Aptitude Battery. Tests are administered at scheduled times. For more information, please contact the Education Center at 760-830-6881.
The Education Center is an authorized PearsonVue Testing Center. Uniformed service members, family members, and DOD employees may take state licensing and national certification examinations without having to drive to San Bernardino or Riverside. Military Academic Skills Program
The Military Academic Skills Program offers instruction in mathematics, reading and writing. This no-cost program covers all book costs, supplies, and other materials. Commanding Officers may refer students or service members may refer themselves. Family members are eligible to participate on a space-available basis. United States Military Apprenticeship Program
United States Military Apprenticeship Program and the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, have agreed that a number of military skills can lead to certification of completion of apprenticeship in jobs comparable to civilian fields. To qualify for this program, servicemembers must be on active duty, have a high school diploma or GED equivalence, be designated in a job with approved apprentice skills, and meet the requirements for the journeyman rating, applicable to the trade. A current list of related civilian trades approved for the USMAP are listed on the USMAP Website.
College Classes
The Combat Center has Copper Mountain College and National University aboard the installation offering daytime and evening courses. Degrees are available at all levels, from certificate through graduate degree programs. Both institutions offer courses in an accelerated format (e.g. 4-week, 8-week, and 9-week terms). Programs, course descriptions and financial aid information are available at both the Education Center and at each institution.
Tuition Assistance
Tuition Assistance is available to active duty service members at the rate of up to $4500 per fiscal year. This benefit pays up to 100 percent of the cost of tuition for approved colleges, universities, vocational/technical schools and programs. In order to be eligible for Tuition Assistance, Marines must first attend the College 101 brief offered at the Eduation Center. The Education Center has qualified specialists to provide academic advising to service members, family members and civilians.
