Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
The California Department of Health Services requires all dogs over four months old to have a certificate of current rabies vaccination stating the type, manufacturer and lot number of rabies vaccine used and date of administration. All cities and counties in California have dog control ordinances. It is strongly recommended that cats be rabies immunized, especially if they have access to outdoors. Cats, pet birds and pet rabbits must be healthy on admittance into the state. Parakeets may not be brought into the state for the purpose of sale. Pet ferrets are prohibited in California.
All pets living aboard the Combat Center must be registered and have a microchip. For assistance, contact the veterinary services aboard the Combat Center at 760-830-6896 or visit them in building 1028.
There are no travel entitlements for pets on official travel orders. Space-A flights accept up to two pets (cats and dogs only with total weight not to exceed 100 pounds including cages) on Air Mobility Command flights. If you are flying to Twentynine Palms on a commercial airline, please contact the airline to determine specific transportation requirements.
If you are traveling to the desert by car, please remember that it gets very hot in the desert. It is unacceptable to leave pets unattended in a vehicle when temperatures can climb to over 100 degrees.
Contact the base Veterinary Services for specific quarantine requirements. Call 760-830-6896 for more information. Also, you can call SATO Travel for all your travel needs 1-866-950-1636.
Pet boarding for dogs, cats and other household animals is not available aboard the Combat Center. Check local listings in Twentynine Palms, Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley for facilities near the Combat Center. A limited number of rooms are available for dogs only at The Inn of the Corps, Desert View. For information on fees and availability contact them at 760-830-6583.
Veterinary services aboard Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center are an Army-run clinic behind the Commissary. They offer examinations and vaccinations for your pets. All pets in base housing must be microchipped, which is offered at this clinic. They are located in building 1028 and can be reached at 760-830-6896.
The Marine Corps has a set official policy on types of dogs allowed in installation housing and other rules surrounding pets on base. You must read this policy before you plan your move if you plan to live in government housing. Liberty Military Housing office will be able to assist you with any additional questions. They are located in building 1003 and can be reached at 760-368-4500.
