Emergency Assistance

Currently Anniston Army Depot does not have a AER officer; all requests should be submitted to Redstone Arsenal Huntsville Alabama. Anniston ACS personnel will assist with the AER request and accept all intake paperwork.

Army Emergency Relief is located in Building 220 and can be reached by calling 256-235-7971/7170. All requests will go through AER at Redstone Arsenal Huntsville, Alabama.

AER loans or grants can be approved to help with emergency financial needs for food, rent, utilities, transportation, vehicle repair, funeral expenses or medical/dental expenses.

Eligibility

Personnel eligible for assistance include active-duty and retired Army personnel and their dependents, spouses and orphans of eligible Army personnel who died while on active duty or after they retired, members of the Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve on continuous active duty for more than 30 days and their dependents or have retired after age 60.

Where to Apply for Assistance

You may apply for AER assistance at any installation. If there is no AER section, you may go to any of the following: American Red Cross Chapter, Air Force Aid Society, or Navy Relief Society. All branches of service have interservice agreements to assist any military individual.

An emergency in transit can happen to anyone. You can be prepared to handle unforeseen problems along the way with a little pre-move planning.

Pre-Move Preparation

1. Clearly mark a map of your travel and route plans.
2. Make hotel reservations two to four weeks in advance.
3. Have your car serviced by your own reliable mechanic.
4. Carry a dependable spare tire and tools to change it.
5. Check oil, antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid levels.
6. Check to be sure that the headlights, taillights and windshield wipers are in proper working order.
7. Know where to obtain emergency care along the route, prior to departure.
8. Carry the telephone number for the highway patrol.
9. Review the route with a passenger. In case of unexpected diversions, he or she can help the driver.

Important Items To Take With You

1. Telephone numbers and directions for the hotels where you will be staying
2. Automobile registration card and insurance
3. Contact number for the insurance agent
4. Spare set of car keys
5. Battery jumper cables and flares for emergencies
6. Proof of medical, auto and household good insurance
7. Telephone book
8. All important documents including marriage certificate, birth certificate, immunizations record, assignment orders, leave form, passport, proof of citizenship and any other pertinent information
9. Telephone number of your sponsor or unit commander.

Things To Remember While Traveling

• Plan a realistic travel schedule.
• Rest the alternative driver as much as possible.
• Pack valuable items inside the trunk during the day and take them into the hotel at night.
• Use well-traveled routes and safe neighborhoods.
• Don't overload the car and obstruct your view.
