Each installation provides information about the types of schools and programs offered on or near your installation for your child. Learn about the types of programs, guidelines and requirements for each school. Whether you choose to send your child to a Department of Defense School, a private school or public school, your installation can help you explore all of your options to make the right decision for you and your child.
The schools located on Edwards AFB are public schools and are operated by Muroc Joint Unified School District within Kern County, CA. There are several other school districts that serve the off-base communities surrounding Edwards AFB. The schools follow a traditional school calendar (August through June). Parents may request a copy of the School Accountability Report Card for any school by contacting the district office or contacting the school directly. The report contains information on student achievement, environment, resources, and demographics. There are no DoD Schools on or near Edwards AFB.
There are numerous private schools serving the cities surrounding Edwards AFB. Programs are available for grades preschool through high school. The state of California publishes a private school directory which lists all of the private schools available within the state.
Accreditation
The Muroc Joint Unified School District High Schools are accredited through the Western Associations of Schools and Colleges - a 6 year accreditation.
Bus Service
There is no bus service available on Edwards AFB. School bus transportation is available for residents living outside the North Gate of Edwards AFB and attend the Boron Elementary and High Schools.
Meals
The Muroc Joint Unified School District participates in the National School Lunch Program. Lunches follow a meal pattern designed to reflect the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Each meal has protein, furit and/or vegetable, grains (bread) and milk. Whole or low fat milk is available each day. If eligibility requirements are met a child may receive free or reduced price meals. Each year an adult household member will need to complete the proper application which is available at the school.
School Sports Programs
A wide variety of school sponsored sports programs are available at the Junior/Senior High School level. These may include: Football, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, and track.
Before and After School Programs
School field trips are coordinated during school hours while some extra-curricular activities are coordinated after school hours. Also available on base are a wide variety of activities coordinated through the Edwards AFB Youth Center.
Exceptional Children Programs
There are no set programs available for children with special needs at Branch Elementary and Desert Jr/Sr High Schools, but special classes are available. To find out what programs are available for children with special needs contact the school Principal.
Two schools are located on Edwards AFB, both of which are operated by Muroc Unified School District. They are not DoD operated schools.
Desert Jr/Sr High School serves grades 7 through 12 with an average enrollment of 620 students. Class size averages 20 students per teacher in the 4 core subject areas, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Sciences.
Branch Elementary serves Transitional K through 6th grade. Average enrollment at Branch is 830 with an average class size of 24 to 1.
Average enrollment for the school district is 2000.

The Edwards Air Force Base School Liaison Officer (SLO) is the central point of contact for school-related matters. The Edwards AFB SLO works directly with base leadership, families, school districts, and local communities. The SLO fosters and promotes quality education for military and civilian children by providing resource and referral services to family support agencies on Edwards AFB and in the local community. The SLO is available to assist families in providing information on area schools, registrations procedures, required documents, and other issues involving student placement or adjustments.
