Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
A maximum of TWO animals per household are allowed while residing on Edwards Air Force Base. All animals must be registered within 10 working days of arrival by presenting a current rabies certification or scheduling vaccinations at the vet clinic. An Edwards’ rabies and identification tag will be issued upon proper proof of immunization. Owners will confine pets at their residence or exercise them under the owner's immediate control on a leash at all times. No pets will be left unattended in motor vehicles. There are limited pet-friendly rooms available at the High Desert Inn. Dogs and cats are not allowed in the dormitories. Breeding or abandoning animals on Edwards is prohibited.
The Transportation Management Office does not authorize service members’ pet(s) to be shipped. Costs of transporting pets are at owner's expense. Please check with your TMO and/or local veterinary clinic for transporting pets.
Inbound personnel to Edwards traveling with pets must ensure that their pet’s immunization records are current. Pet owners should check with the veterinary clinic and the Transportation Management Office at their current base, as well as with the airport that they are using for other pertinent pet travel requirements.
Prior to your arrival to Edwards Air Force Base, check with your Transportation and Management Office, especially if you are overseas prior to transporting your pet for international airport quarantine laws.
Currently, Edwards Air Force Base Lodging has 16 temporary lodging facility rooms that allow pets. They also have kennel listings available for pet owners. Since the rooms fill up fast, inbound personnel must immediately call the Lodging Office at 661-275-7666 or DSN 312-525-7666 for billeting reservations. There is a $10 additional fee for TLF rooms that have pet accommodations. The High Desert Inn requires a copy of the pet’s current immunization records upon check-in. No more than two pets can be checked-in.
Veterinary services are authorized for animals owned by personnel authorized Defense Department medical care. The Edwards Veterinary Clinic provides services for small animals including health certificates, vaccinations and medical surgical and laboratory procedures as mission permits. Limited services are available for horses. Emergencies involving life or limb threatening injuries will be seen during normal duty hours, depending on the availability of a veterinarian. Please call for an appointment. It is highly recommended that pet owners maintain a relationship with an off-base vet as a backup for those times when the military veterinarian will not be available to see pets.
If an emergency occurs upon arrival or after duty hours, please call the Animal Emergency Clinic at 661-723-3959. Edwards Air Force Base Clinic has partnered with this free-standing veterinary clinic in Lancaster that offers 24/7 emergency assistance to pet owners.
There is new information on the mutation of parvo virus in dogs. Please check your pets’ vaccine status. If they are behind on their parvo vaccine, get them boostered before the start of the doggy social season. If they have never been vaccinated and are pups they must have at least three parvo vaccines three weeks apart and wait at least two weeks after the last booster before taking them out onto the sidewalks and dog parks, etc. Until then, keep them in the bubble of your house and backyard only. The current vaccines are protective against this strain.
