If you’ve ever considered taking your education a step further, you should look to your installation for more information and assistance. They can help you decide if receiving an advanced degree is right for you, tell you which local colleges and classes are offered and find out if you’re eligible for tuition assistance. The Voluntary Education Center, or Installation Education Center, is available to help you put together a plan to advance your education.
Military spouses can also choose to engage with an education and career coach through the DoD’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, or SECO. These coaches can assist them in exploring multiple tools, resources and information to reach their educational goals. For information regarding off-base college programs, contact the respective college for specific course fees and fees schedules. The Education Office can provide a list of off-base colleges that includes phone numbers and addresses to colleges in the local vicinity and specific degrees offered. On-base and off-base colleges offer Bachelors Degrees starting at the Community College level. Education counselors are available for each individual school on base. No appointment is necessary. The Base Education Counselor is available at the Education Center to help with on-base, off-base and online schooling information; there is no charge for assistance at any of the colleges or at the education office; the contact number is listed above.
The base Education Center has a comprehensive brochure available with information regarding various tests, descriptions of all on base college programs, and term dates. Contact the Education Office at 661-277-2713 or DSN 312-527-2713. Their hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
GED examinations are available and free for military members. The Antelope Valley Adult School in Lancaster will assist dependents and civilians with GED. Call them at 661-942-3042.
Tuition Assistance
Adult dependents of military personnel pay the California resident rate of tuition during their first year in California. After that, they must become California residents to continue paying the resident rate.
For information regarding scholarships and grants, contact the Education Office. The Education Office has a database of over 150,000 awards, grants, loans and scholarships, called SRN, Scholarship Resource Network. This is a free service provided for active duty personnel, DoD civilians, retirees and their family members.
