It’s likely that employment will change when a move occurs, especially for military spouses. The information below will provide you with employment assistance information and resources available such as SECO, MyCAA and MSEP Portals.
Employment in the local area surrounding Fort Hamilton is limited. The unemployment rate for Kings County is 4.5 percent, while the jobless rate for New York City is 4.3 percent. New York City minimum wage will be $15.00 per hour effective December 31, 2019. Visit the New York State Department of Labor website for employment opportunities and other resources.
Good Afternoon Fort Hamilton Military Community,
Are you an Active Duty Military Spouse seeking employment?
Are you Active Duty Service Member married to someone seeking employment?
Do you know an Active Duty Military Spouse seeking employment?
If so, keep reading…
BLUF: Fort Hamilton MWR/ACS has fostered a relationship with New York State Dept. of Labor (NYSDOL), which will ease the access to employment resources for Fort Hamilton Military Spouses.
The Backstory:
In Sept of 2020 a study, I found shocking, was released stating Active Duty Military Spouse Unemployment was a staggering 24% and Military Spouse Underemployment was between 31%-51%.
In the same month, Fort Campbell was lauded for their establishment of a consolidated career center including a partnership that created the on post presence of the Tennessee Dept. of Labor.
This got our wheels turning.
While we certainly don’t have the space or resources of a large installation like Fort Campbell, we do have the ability to leverage our connections with local government agencies to in essence pull off something similar, but virtually/electronically.
Our Goal:
Directly connect Fort Hamilton Active Duty Military Spouses, of all professional experience levels, who are seeking public or private employment, with the State of New York Dept of Labor, so that they may gain easier access to employment opportunity.
Vision:
Military Spouse walks into ACS and says, “I’m an Active Duty Military Spouse, I’m looking for employment, can you help?” ACS gives them the attached form, complies and sends their documents to NYSDOL, a week later a NYSDOL caseworker contacts the employment seeker begins diligently working to find the Military Spouse employment.
Here’s how it works:
Email the following items to Trevor.m.Loew.naf@mail.mil:
Completed/signed attached fillable PDF form
SSN Redacted Military Orders (for verification purposes only)
Resume
Note: If completed, those documents, with the exception of the orders, will be sent directly to POC at State of NY Dept of Labor.
Then…
NYSDOL will review the documents, and within a week should assign a case worker to the employment seeker.
The case worker will work to match employment seeker to an employer.
Notes:
NYSDOL will ASSIST with leads, coaching, and employment related services.
It will be the employment seekers responsibility to follow up on leads.
If the employment seeker does not follow up on the leads, NYSDOL efforts will be futile.
Employment is not guaranteed. Fort Hamilton will act only as the conduit between the employment seeker and NYSDOL.
The aforementioned required documents will be sent to me, as NYSDOL offices are all remote due to C-19.
Once they reopen NYSDOL offices, method of initial delivery subject to change. More to follow…
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to stop into our FH ACS office, 114 White Ave, or reach out to me directly via email.
Kindly note this is a pilot program, that may run into obstacles. I ask that those hurdles be communicated with me, so that we may work to overcome them.
We will work to ensure this initiative is successful, in our continued efforts to improve the lives of those Families station at USAG Fort Hamilton.
Appreciate your support.
Trevor Loew
