Policies and rules for shipping pets vary at each installation. It’s important to understand the regulations, prohibitions and laws at your new installation before moving with a pet. Below, you’ll find installation-specific details for registering, boarding and transporting your pet.
Animals entering the United States from a foreign country may be subject to regulation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service as all well as other federal agencies. Visit the USDA website to determine current criteria for moving your pet.
All pets residing on post must be registered with the Veterinarian Treatment Facility, be current on vaccinations and be microchipped. Failure to comply will result in the loss of VTF privileges until proper documentation is provided.
For those residing off post, rabies vaccination must be given to all animals at three months of age. This must be done by a licensed veterinarian. Registration is mandatory for all animals residing in Liberty County. You can register your animals at any local vet clinic or the Liberty County Environmental Health Department. If you have any questions, call 912-368-5520.
Make sure your pet is in overall good health before traveling and that shots and vaccinations are current. If transporting your animal by air, check with the airline to get specific information on travel requirements and restrictions. Common restrictions include high temperatures and inclement weather. Occasionally, small pets can be shipped on military flights, but availability, regulations and fees are always changing.
Stewart's Pet Boarding facility is available on the Fort Stewart installation to board dogs and cats of active duty, retirees, Army civilians and contractors. Long-term boarding is available up to 90 days.
Cost for boarding is $22/night for dogs and $15/night for cats. Cost variation depends on animal's size, species and if the animal is neutered or spayed.
