Resources are available to help you understand and manage your finances, including one-on-one financial counseling to assist you and your family with financial readiness. Services are designed to focus on money management issues throughout your active-duty lifecycle and into retirement. Financial Management Program managers and Relocation Assistance Program managers are available to assist you in anticipating costs incurred during a move. You can reach Holloman's staff at 575-572-7754 or DSN 312-572-7754. You may also consult with these program managers at your current duty location to help with pre-move planning. Understanding what you are or are not authorized for government expense can help you plan your move. How well you manage your money determines how well you will meet your financial goals. Assistance managing your finances is readily available at no cost through Holloman's Airman and Family Readiness Center. Don't hesitate to contact us for any concerns from budgeting and checkbook management to investments.
There are numerous financial management classes offered on a monthly basis at the A&FRC. They include basic financial management and financial management refresher classes, home-buying seminars, Babies Cost Bundles classes, and basic investment and advanced investment classes. All classes are open to military, their dependents and government employees.
The cost of living in Alamogordo is moderate. There is no cost-of-living allowance. You may receive Temporary Lodging Allowance if you are moving assignments within the continental U.S. A temporary lodging facility is $82 per night. On-base housing is privatized, and the median cost of a house in Alamogordo is around $100,000. An average utility bill is approximately $150 to $200 a month. The minimum car insurance coverage requirements are 25/50/10.
In case of a medical emergency, the Gerald Champion Regional Hospital in Alamogordo has an emergency room which is open 24 hours. Holloman Air Force Base does not have an ER. If other emergencies arise, you may call the base operator at 575-572-1110 or the command post at 575-572-7575.
You are eligible to receive Advance Pay during a permanent change of station move. This will, however, be automatically withdrawn from the active-duty member's monthly pay, reducing your monthly income. Contact your local Accounting and Finance Office for more details.
Relocation can be a very expensive experience. Actual travel costs whether vehicle expenses or commercial carrier; meal expenses; billeting or motel costs; pet boarding; rental costs (often first month, last month, plus a security deposit!); home-buying costs; utility deposits; additional automobile insurance charges; etc.
