It is essential in an emergency that you contact your chain of command, beginning with your supervisor and/or first sergeant as soon as possible. Air Force Aid Society and Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (Emergency Financial Assistance)
For more information about the Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) to include guidance on applying for emergency financial assistance, please contact the M&FRC at DSN 315-226-4735 or visit the AFAS website at www.afas.org. For Navy members, a representative from the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) at Misawa AB can be reached anytime at 080-1803-7164 from a Japanese cell phone. In an emergency, there is always help available at Misawa Air Base, Japan. The Command Post can also assist in connecting personnel with an AFAS and NMCRS representative.
American Red Cross (Emergency Communications)
The American Red Cross is available on Misawa Air Base to assist in emergencies by providing emergency communication messages to the local command. The Misawa Red Cross can be contacted at DSN 315-226-3016; from CONUS 011-81-176-77-3016; from a Japanese cell phone 0176-77-3016. If you are calling after normal duty hours, please contact the after-hours Red Cross 24-hour toll-free number 877-272-7337. The toll-free number is also the number for family members in CONUS to call if there is an emergency and they need to get notification to you and/or your leadership. Hand carry ALL important papers: official orders, military ID(s), passport(s), shot record(s), medical record(s), marriage and birth certificate(s), immigration or naturalization documents, etc. for you and your family members. DO NOT pack them in your luggage or your household goods. Write down and carry telephone numbers for your relatives, your sponsor (both DSN and commercial), your gaining unit, and the Command Post at Misawa Air Base. These numbers will be invaluable in case of an emergency and as you in-process at the installation and your unit. Should a non-medical emergency occur while you are in transit for a permanent change of station move, contact your sponsor, first sergeant, commander or the nearest military installation.
