As soon as you have your orders to Misawa, you should contact the Misawa Military Housing Office (MHO), Navy billeting, or Air Force Unaccompanied Housing. In general, personnel can expect to wait 0-1 months to obtain a military family housing assignment.
Military Family Housing units on the Misawa AB are located in two separate housing areas, Main Base and North Area. There are apartment-style homes, both two and three bedrooms, located in 9 apartment towers.
In addition, there are town houses with two-, three- and four-bedroom units available. Generally, two-bedroom units are 1,038 square feet, three-bedroom units are 1,470 square feet and four-bedroom units are up to 1,585 square feet.
One housing area is located on the Main Base where most of the amenities are situated and the majority of people work. The second is in the North Area, which is a 10-minute drive from the Main Base. The area has a middle/high school, small fitness center, gas station, barbershop, an Anthony's Pizza and a Dry Cleaner.
Misawa Air Base is under an On-Base First Policy which means all Military on Accompanied Orders will reside on-base. Off-base housing is generally not an option for Military Accompanied families not an option unless you meet certain criteria such as an over 4 bedroom housing entitlement. Off-base is allowed for all Unaccompanied Air Force E4 and above with more than 3 Years of Service and there are many American-style homes that provide all the comforts you would expect.
The MHO maintains a listing of off-base rental properties, maps of the Misawa area and English-speaking real estate agents to assist you in your search.
Japanese homes are generally much smaller than those in the United States, so be prepared. Housing is also significantly more expensive, however your housing allowance ceiling is normally enough to cover homes that are available.
