To help customers access moving resources more easily, Move.mil has moved to the Military OneSource website. Now, moving resources from the Defense Personal Property Program and Military OneSource are available on the Military OneSource website.

Visit the Moving Your Personal Property page on MilitaryOneSource.mil for comprehensive moving information, resources and services. Access content from the former Move.mil website, including moving guides and tips, videos and FAQs, entitlement brochures, household goods shipment logistics, DPS log in and more. There are also links for retiring and separating members, specific service branch information and comprehensive relocation assistance.

As soon as you receive your permanent change of station orders, it’s important to begin scheduling your move. The Defense Personal Property System, or DPS, is the online system you can use to request and manage your household goods shipment(s). To schedule your move, log in to DPS using a common access card, or CAC, or by obtaining a user ID and password through the DPS online system.

Begin to plan what items will go in unaccompanied baggage, in your household goods shipment and in long-term, Non-Temporary Storage, or NTS, storage – check with your sponsor or overseas housing office to assist in determining what items to ship.

If you have an issue and would like to speak to someone, the Personal Property Activity, or PPA, is another resource available to assist during your move. You can speak directly with a fellow uniformed service member who can provide more information or help you work through any issues you encounter.

Moving with your pet includes researching airline requirements and quarantine restriction laws in your new location. Many airlines have requirements for size, weight, breed, number of animals, kennel construction, documentation and seasonal limitations. Small pets may be shipped on military flights, but availability and regulations frequently change. Contact your installation household goods/transportation office to request specific country instructions. Military OneSource can make your move easier with helpful tips, resources and hands-on information related to moving with pets and more.

Vehicle & POV Policy

The Department of War strongly recommends placing your Privately Owned Vehicle in government storage rather than shipping it to Japan due to high costs, lengthy transit times, and strict pre-approval requirements. Ensure your PCS orders explicitly authorize POV storage before departing your origin base.

Storage

Place vehicles in government storage. Coordinate with your local Personal Property Shipping Office and ensure your PCS orders reflect storage authorization for the duration of your overseas tour.

Shipping

Shipping a POV is a lengthy, costly process requiring pre-approval. Service members must personally cover all excess transportation expenses. Please consult with your appropriate Personal Property Shipping Office and/or destination PPSO for clarification on authorizing POV shipment into Japan.

Travel, Pets, & Logistics

• Primary Travel Method: Air Mobility Command Patriot Express flights are the recommended and standard method for PCS transit to Misawa Air Base.
• Pet Movement: Rules for transporting pets from the U.S. to Japan are stringent. Contact your local Transportation Management Office Passenger Travel Section immediately for guidance, and review the official Misawa AB Pet Travel Fact Sheet.

Housing & Furnishings Support

Government-owned furnishings support is determined by the entitlements authorized on your PCS orders.

WATCH OUT FOR: Pet quarantine requirements in Japan can be extensive and costly if preparation steps (such as microchipping and rabies titers) are not started months in advance. Reach out to TMO and the destination veterinary clinic as soon as you receive your orders.
