If you need emergency assistance, you can expect to get help from your installation, your branch of service resources. There are programs to support you in a variety of situations, including victim assistance, emergencies en route and service-specific relief societies. Below, you’ll find types of assistance, contact information, and detailed procedures and guidance to help you through any tough circumstances that you or your family may face.
The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program (SAPR) provides victim advocates, support, resource information and referrals for victims of sexual assault. For immediate emergency assistance, please contact the NAS Oceana & Dam Neck Annex 24/7 Unit Victim Advocate at 757-438-3260. The Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC) can be reached at 757-433-2912 or 24/7 at 757-641-6247. Civilian Victim Advocates can be reached at 757-433-2912 or 24/7 at 757-438-3037. The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) provides clinical assessment, treatment and services for service members, their intimate partners, and family members involved in allegations of domestic abuse and child abuse. The goal of the Family Advocacy Program is to prevent domestic violence by encouraging people to examine their own behavior and take steps to learn and practice healthier behaviors. The FAP provides a variety of interventions and treatment services to meet the needs of individuals and families. It provides counseling, clinical case management, treatment groups, and refers families to military and civilian resources as appropriate.Victims must have access to protection, care and support. Interventions are needed to ensure safety. Services are available for victims including assisting with protection orders, accompaniment to court, and safety planning. If you think you may be a victim of domestic abuse, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24 hours a day for safety planning and referrals for local resources: http://www.ndvh.org/. While traveling, remember to carry important medical papers, prescriptions and important telephone numbers so that you can contact your sponsor and your next duty station in case an emergency arises.
Emergencies can happen no matter how much planning you do, so part of your plan needs to be "what if." If an emergency occurs while in transit and it is possible, contact the nearest military installation for assistance. If you are not near a military installation and/or your emergency occurs after hours, contact the American Red Cross at 877-272-7337. If a financial emergency occurs, you can request Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society assistance through the American Red Cross. 2-1-1 Virginia is a free state-wide information and referral system that provides a wide variety of health and human service referrals. You can access their database at https://www.211.org or you can talk with a certified call specialist by dialing 2-1-1 toll free — they are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society
The NMCRS provides interest-free loans or grants to help with emergency needs such as emergency transportation, medical/dental bills, food, rent, disaster-relief assistance, child care expenses, and essential vehicle repairs. For more information or to make an appointment, call 757-433-3383.
American Red Cross
The American Red Cross provides social welfare services to needy military personnel and their families. They assist with emergency communications, financial assistance, and help with humanitarian reassignment and hardship. For assistance, call 877-272-7337.
Salvation Army
